Another New Supreme Court Term, Another New Justice | Cato @ Liberty

Chicago and Citizens United actually produced fewer dissents than any in recent memory—we do look forward to: Two big free speech challenges, one over a statute prohibiting the sale of violent video games to minors, another the offensive protesting of a fallen soldier’s funeral; An Establishment Clause lawsuit against Arizona’s tax credit for private tuition funds (an alternative to educational voucher programs); Regulatory federalism (or “preemption”) cases involving: safety standards for seatbelts; an Arizona statute regarding the hiring of illegal aliens; and the forbidding of [more...]

Facts About Home Paternity Testing | I am pregnant!

People who will be using the DNA final results in court and legal proceedings must get laboratory DNA screening instead of the home-test. In legal paternity checks, the court seeks to establish that the DNA samples are monitored to steer clear of tampering or screening by a biased party. Residence paternity assessments are ordinarily performed beyond legal requirements. They’re uncomplicated to obtain since convenience retailers and online shops are selling these kits. As soon as you send the outcomes to the laboratory to analyze, they are sure to keep the outcomes private. As a matter of [more...]

23andMe's DNA Mixup Leaves 96 Customers With Wrong Test Results

23andMe's DNA Mixup Leaves 96 Customers With Wrong Test Results by Amar Toor on June 8, 2010 at 12:45 PM As we know all too well here at Switched, everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone, however, makes mistakes quite as far-reaching as was the blunder that private DNA-testing company 23andMe recently made. On Friday, the company announced that "a number of new 23andMe customer samples were incorrectly processed" by the third-party lab that conducts the DNA tests, and confessed that "up to" 96 people received test results that weren't really theirs. As you can imagine, mass confusion ensued. [more...]

Home DNA Tests: Proposed New rules : : Healthcare News

A set of new rules and guidelines have been put forward by Human Genetics Commission (HGC) to crack down on inaccurate and harmful home do-it-yourself DNA tests freely sold over the internet. Many private companies, based mainly in the US, offer such direct to consumer testing kits that estimate a person’s risk of suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s or breast cancer, by analyzing the genetic codes. Paternity testing or finding out the identity of the father is another reason as to why these tests are gaining in popularity. The Commission has expressed its reservations about [more...]

Should private DNA testing be banned until it is more accurate?

Should governments be able to bar people from undergoing their own – privately funded – DNA tests, which have the potential to foreshadow future a variety of health problems, or is such a move another manifestation of the “nanny state”? In the name of “protecting” us, the government seeks to prevent willing consumers from learning medically useful information about their own bodies that could tell them which diseases they may develop – and help them make important treatment, prevention, and lifestyle decisions. While forewarned is forearmed, if the results of such tests are not [more...]

Wisconsin Law Journal » Blog Archive » DNA testing rules may change

Further, he argued, “for situations in which there was no finding of probable cause to continue with criminal prosecution, access to someone’s DNA sample would be of no benefit to anyone in the legal system.” Under the provisions of the bill, a person who intentionally fails to submit a sample is subject to a fine of up to $10,000, up to nine months in prison or both. Destroying DNA Once an arrestee provides a sample, criminal attorneys worry that it may be difficult to have that sample destroyed later. The bills provide that crime labs must expunge DNA analysis from the databank if a [more...]

DNA Technology Roots out Paternity Fraud

If the DNA testing proves his relationship, he intends to seek $4 million from an alleged cover-up by Ms. James. Tiger Woods may also be caught up in a challenge to prove he is not the father of alleged mistress Devon James’ nine year old son, as reported by Radar Online. Paternity Dna

As the title shows. I need to verify weather or not I am the father of a newborn that a woman claims I am. It is possibly true, on the other hand, it may be false. Is getting this done possible without getting a lawyer, she doesn't seem receptive to getting this done voluntarily. Why should I get a lawyer if I'm just going to end up getting a court-ordered standard child support payment plan if it is mine. Unless they can help lower my payments, I don't see what more they can do for me - just another expense. If they can help me in ways I can't accomplish myself, about how much would it [more...]

'Touch' DNA analysis ordered for clothing from Sil

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division met yesterday morning with a scientist at LabCorp in Research Triangle Park to discuss the possibility of submitting the clothing to "touch" DNA analysis, a sophisticated test that may be able to retrieve and identify DNA samples from anyone who touched the clothing, Cunningham said in a statement. As a result of that meeting, LabCorp will conduct extensive DNA testing with the goal of obtaining identifiable forensic information. Results of the testing will be announced as soon as they are available, Cunningham said. "While we have complete [more...]

Canine dna testing is normally achieved through a small extraction of blood, hair, cheek swab or tissue sample... The benefits can be quite amazing as we will discover later on....but first lets answer some basic questions.... What does dna stand for...? Nobel season '10: Chemistry

I've also seen that different large-scale DNA-sequencing approaches, primarily shotgun sequencing, are on the map in Swedish media which I think is really strange. Firstly because Fred Sanger, who developed shotgun sequencing, is 92 years old and a double Nobel laureate in chemistry already (1958 and 1980), and secondly because the field of large-scale sequencing still hasn't peaked by any means. Perhaps Leroy Hood (again) could be considered for the development of the first automated DNA sequencer? Anyway, the technologies that are advancing the field have been developed by private companies [more...]

DNAction » Pathway Launches an Extended Carrier Status Screening ...

Traditionally, pregnancy-related genetic testing has been limited to prospective parents whose family history or ethnicity suggests that they may be at an increased risk for a particular genetic disease. One example of this is genetic screening for Tay-Sachs disease mutations in people of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. The problem with this approach is that it relies on self-reported ethnicity and family history, which can be incomplete or misleading. Additionally, the ethnic distribution and prevalence of many genetic disease-causing mutations is not known. The Simple Solution Using only a [more...]

But today, applications of our understanding of DNA in areas such as genetic engineering and cloning seem primitive compared to synthetic biology, a field in which the basic building blocks of life are pieced together from scratch to suit the needs of research, medicine, and the environment. A Crash Course on Brazil and Its Endless Efforts to Save the Northeast

My first major test was met, Dr. Hillman's palestra a success. Soon I was asked to speak at a chosen audience in the auditorium of the US Embassy in Rio. The word about the Northeast and my drought expertise had made the rounds. In fact, William Warne USAID Director in Rio planned a trip to the area and asked that Helen and I join the party. My two-year assignment in Brazil was successful. I was asked to consider a job in USAID; even a possible career in the diplomatic service, but Arizona was where our hearts belonged. *** Brazilians had other reasons besides Western movies to be excited [more...]

The Farce of Hyping Gene Studies - AGE OF AUTISM

By John Stone I could scarcely believe my eyes last week when BBC news made its principal story one morning last week a genetics paper purporting to “prove” the ADHD was a genetic disorder (HERE ).  In fact, the study had really only at best discovered a modest statistical association between a genetic pattern (against controls) in 15% of cases. The authors no doubt eager to draw attention and further patronage for their activities could probably scarcely believe their luck with such a publicity coup. Equally fascinating was the speed with which the BBC realised its boob. By 9.30 am [more...]

Unique technologies such as brain fingerprinting, DNA fingerprinting, and skin printing are poised to propel the market forward in the long term.
