DNA Is New Weapon In Fight Against Dogfighting
Working with the ASPCA, Wictum is compiling a database called the Canine Combined DNA Index System. So far, it includes about 400 samples taken from inside the cheeks of fighting dogs, including those seized in the Missouri raid. It's designed to help law enforcement go after not just the fight operators, but the breeders, as well. Rickey says that's where the money is. "For most of these fighters, it all comes down to creating a champion, and then to breed that champion," he says. Breeders can get as much as $20,000 for a puppy from a champion bloodline, according to Rickey. And genetic [more...]

Dog Breed Identification Dna
What is your experience with DNA testing to identify the breed of dog through Petco? We have a mixed breed dog rescue which is only beautiful, but just know that she is part Golden Retriever. We are curious to find out what mix of breeds that others might be, but the comments I read in these DNA tests are so extreme. Some say they are accurate, others, including veterinarians say they are a total waste of money. What you say? Please do not respond to this criticism – I am the most loving and responsible pet lover you can find. I said we were curious and to add made to identify the races [more...]

DNA: Size Does Matter. But is it Science or Art? « Exploratorium ...
Then I randomly found this website, which starts with the same idea as our DNA Cheek Cell Extraction Demo but takes it to a whole new level: You send your cheek cells in the mail to their company. They extract your DNA from your cells, then use PCR to amplify unique sections of DNA in your genome. This DNA is loaded into a gel and a current is run through the gel to separate the DNA based on size. UV dye is added to the whole thing to make your DNA strands visible, a photograph is taken, and voila!…a giant canvas print with the color scheme of your choice is ready to hang on your [more...]

What breed of dog that you think would work better to live in an apartment? I'm considering buying a dog / puppy and I currently live in an apartment. The dog may only for about 4-5 hours a day, so I want a race that does not bark much and annoy the neighbors while I'm gone. Also I want a dog that is not too active, but not too lazy (medium activity) and medium enterprises. Suggestions? Any stories from experience? What dogs do NOT recommend for this situation? Thanks! Dog DNA - Finding Your Breed
There are several services, both online and in person, that can use specific information (the most accurate of which is a tissue sample containing dog DNA) to find out the exact history of your dog, including breed information, and which traits about your dog come from which breed. This can be used to determine a dog's temperament before you even adopt it, which can be a great way to make sure the dog will get along with your children or your other pets. Remember, certain types of dogs are better with certain things than others, and it never feels good to make a commitment to an animal that [more...]

Do Not Overdo The Antibiotics
The quest for finding new antibiotics is still in place, sending lots of scientists out grubbing around in the dirt and performing highly technical DNA analyses on likely-looking bits of mud or mould. This is because bacteria have a tendency to develop a resistance to a certain antibiotic, which means that the doctor has to dish out a different antibiotic... but then the bacteria become resistant to that next antibiotic, and so forth. Are bacteria getting stronger and stronger via the process of antibiotic-stimulated natural selection? Is survival of the fittest working to breed new [more...]

Pit Bulls in Chicago – UPchicago.com
Breed-specific legislation, or BSL, is the route some municipalities have taken in an attempt to curb attacks by “vicious” dogs. This is based on appearance of the dog, as DNA testing of dogs, while available, is expensive, not to mention complicated when you start analyzing mutts. American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, and Rottweilers are among the most common targets of BSL. Breed bans are in effect in many cities, some mandating that owners of certain breeds carry more insurance or build higher fences, to an outright ban, as in Denver, [more...]

Rough Collie (also known as the Long-Haired Collie) is a breed of dog developed originally for herding in Scotland. It is well known through the works of author Albert Payson Terhune, and latterly through the Lassie novel, movies, and television shows. There is also a smooth-coated variety; some breed organizations consider the smooth-coat and rough-coat dogs to be variations of the same breed. Three coat colors are recognized for Rough Collies: sable and white, where the “sable” ranges from pale tan to a mahogany; tricolour, which is primarily black edged in tan; blue [more...]

Jeff Cohen I'll admit it--a post on an entirely different blog inspired me this week. (Warning: Click here ONLY if you are a fan of the New York Yankees--otherwise, you won't find it the least bit amusing.) If there's one thing I try (and often fail) to do in my writing, it's to avoid the cliche. Now, this isn't always possible, since cliches got to be cliches because they are often useful and unavoidable, but still. Anyone who has read more than three crime fiction novels probably has a working knowledge of the more prevalent conventions in such stories. This leads, then, to DEAD GUY's [more...]
