Whose Baby is it? More Dads Seek DNA Tests

Metropolis Healthcare, the only private lab in the city so far to provide DNA paternity tests, has been getting eight to 10 cases a month. “Infidelity is one of the main reasons behind men asking for this test,’’ said Dr Nisha Ahmad, of Metropolis Labs. “Abroad though, the primary reason is a possible mixing up of babies.’’ She said there are a lot of inquiries about the tests. “Many who approach us for the test are not from the city,’’ she said. Experts also attribute the rise in paternity tests to more couples seeking the help of assisted reproductive methods. Clinics [more...]

Online Forensic Science Degree Programs | Online and Distance ...

As a rule they specialize in one area of the field, such as firearms testing, examining hair, fiber and other crime evidence, or something else they are interested in. Online courses are available to obtain a forensic science degree through accredited schools. Some laboratory work is required but this is usually arranged with a local entity, such as a police department. Taking courses from the convenience of one's home eliminates the need to sit long hours in a classroom and many enjoy the challenges presented. What jobs can you get as graduate of a forensic science degree? A forensic science [more...]

Bloody Gourd May Contain Beheaded King's DNA

Posted @ 6:00 AM on October 13, 2010 by tweetleaks Sick of taxes, a lack of rights and living in poverty, French revolutionists condemned Louis XVI to the guillotine on the morning of January 21, 1793. After a short but defiant speech and a menacing drum roll, the last king of France lost his head as a crowd rushed the scaffold to dip handkerchiefs into his blood as mementos. Or so the story goes. Lending new life to the demise of Louis XVI, scientists performed a battery of DNA tests on dried blood inside a decorative gunpowder gourd that purportedly contained one such handkerchief. DNA fingerprinting simplified

One of the most frequently used tools in biochemistry and biotechnology, agarose gel electrophoresis is a common forensic technique often used in genetic or DNA fingerprinting. The procedure is achieved by moving negatively charged nucleic acid molecules through a gelatinous substance known as agarose by using an electric field. Andrew, in collaboration with his father and other researchers, completed the study, which is published in the January 2008 issue the American Society of Horticultural Science’s journal HortTechnology. The youngest author ever to publish in an ASHS journal, Andrew [more...]

DNA parentage testing when the alleged parent is deceased – DNA Tests

These types of samples will require mtDNA testing techniques, as opposed to standard STR DNA, but can be useful in determining parentage. Since, often times, success can not be guaranteed with samples of the deceased, it is recommended that one consult with a DNA testing laboratory or expert to be advised of the best option for your specific situation. In some cases, it may be helpful to rely on samples from the alleged parent’s family members, which can sometimes indirectly establish parentage. DNA Testing Is A Slippery Slope For Casey Anthony Attorney's

I was shocked that the State of Florida had not already tested this bag and the contents inside for DNA, but apparently they have not. That said, I believe it is a huge mistake for Casey Anthony attorney's Jose Baez and Cheney Mason to focus attention on the science of DNA testing. DNA testing is a wonderful tool that has put many guilty people in prison and set free others who were not guilty. Since I believe Casey Anthony killed Caylee, for her attorney's to start desiring more DNA testing - they are placing on the public and legal record their trust and confidence in a science, which [more...]

Crime labs need major overhaul, study finds - CNN

And, with the exception of DNA technology, the report concludes experts often overstate how much can be determined by forensic techniques running the gamut from fingerprinting to bite mark and hair analysis. According to the findings, except for DNA technology, "no forensic method has been rigorously shown to have the capacity to consistently, and with a high degree of certainty, demonstrate a connection between evidence and a specific individual or source."The report noted that forensic experts in court cases often overstate what can be proven by forensic methods and even attach a numerical [more...]

CT going after company that supplied faulty DNA kits used for criminal investigations The State of Connecticut is seeking a settlement with a California biotechnology company that supplied the State Police forensics laboratory with DNA testing kits that did not have the promised shelf life and may have caused the loss of some important evidence.
