DM seminar in Seattle area Sunday 10/10

Accusation of accuracy, value of the test have been a point of dispelling the need to DNA test for DM. NOW IS THE CHANCE TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS of someone that can give you an accurate answer. For out-of-staters, a weekend in Seattle could be fun packed. It's a short 3 hour drive from Portland area, about 3 from Tri Cities, 7 from Boise, 5 from Spokane....really not that big a deal for the opportunity. I know we travel farther and longer just to do dog shows. IMO this is far more important and worth the time investment! PooPrints™ is a dog DNA identification program from BioPet Vet Lab built on a solid scientific foundation, providing communities with a means to enforce community regulations for pet waste clean-up. Dog waste is more than an aesthetic issue. Yes, the stuff is underfoot quite a bit. In the United States alone, the nation’s 73 million dogs generate approximately 6.3 billion pounds of waste annually. Approximately 40%, or 2.5 billion pounds, is never picked up by owners. Indeed, dog feces is a bacterial breeding ground of diseases that are especially dangerous to children and others with [more...]

the border collie blog - All excited about wifi on the plane ...

I am glad that she's not my only dog that I am running. Although the "in season" part isn't really that bad.  As much as she's a dirty girl normally (loves to play in the mud), she does keep herself pretty clean during her season. Still not sure if I will breed her, but am getting potential boy friends lined up and researched.  It seems there are more "Will not use" rather than "ok, looking good--let's watch them".   Just starting health clearances with Meri.  So far, she's passed her eye exam.  ;-) Got hearing, her DNA profile with AKC, CEA DNA test, hips & elbows at 2 years old.  Not [more...]

Doc is a great-looking 2-3 year-old male who’s breed mix is anyone’s guess. He’s got really interesting markings that suggest Cattledog or Aussie but has a soft short coat like a Lab or Pointer. You’d have to do a DNA test to know for sure! Doc LOVES playing with other dogs so would make a great companion for another active young dog. He’s excellent in his crate and seems to be housetrained. Doc hasn’t paid much attention to the cats in his foster home so may be cat friendly as well. He can be a little shy meeting new people but if you give him a chance, you’ll have a loyal and [more...]

Three questions for the responsible breeders: Are you running the ARVC DNA tests on your breeding stock? Why or why not? We’re not ready or interested in a puppy right at the moment, but the deck is seriously stacked against us that our girl will live to a ripe old age (ARVC isn't the only issue). Breed-specific legislation is ineffective | Standard-Examiner ...

To begin with, the statement that 40 percent of dogs quarantined in Ogden from January to July were pit bulls is baseless, unless DNA testing was done. Since DNA testing became available to the public, it has been a revelation (even to lifelong animal care professionals) that many dogs assumed by appearance to be pit bulls or some type of bully breed were anything but. And it turns out that in the world of animal welfare, visual identification of breeds by shelter staff is notoriously inaccurate. Next, the claim that "... there is just too much evidence, official and anecdotal, that this [more...]

What's That Mutt: A big surprise in Nanai's family tree

Canine Heritage's Web site explains that "In the Mix" breeds are ones that "that have the least amount of influence on your pet's composition, however, they still appear, at a low and measurable amount, in your pet's DNA." And in Nanai's DNA: English Coonhound and, believe it or not, Bernese Mountain Dog. The hound would explain Nanai's tracking behavior and her baying howl when left alone, and the Bernese Mountain Dog would explain her herding instinct. As for her love of water, well, apparently that's just her own personal quirk! Nanai's DNA-test results certainly prove that a dog who [more...]

pedigree numbers - Rottweiler Discussion Forums

The DNA number is just an ID#. The DNA was taken for several possible reasons. 1. Just as another form of permament ID like a tattoo or microchip. 2. The dog was a popular sire (or hoped to be) and the AKC requires DNA on file for studs that are used more then a certain number of times in a year or lifetime. 3. If AI is used, the stud's DNA needs to be on file even if it was only done once. There might be more, but these are the only ones I can think up right now. The OFA numbers are a very good thing to see on a pedigree. If the number is something similar to 25G then the 25 means the [more...]
