MSNBot Reverse DNS Test Fails Requirements

A year ago, Microsoft promised to enable Webmasters a method of . Way too often, rogue spiders mask themselves as official spiders from Google, Yahoo, Live Search or Ask.com. The search engines have enabled methods to conduct reverse DNS lookups on the fly, so that you can allow those spiders that pass the reverse DNS test in and the others, deny at your gate. I opened up my log files for rustybrick.com and found these records for MSNBot, Microsoft Live Search's spider. www.rustybrick.com - "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.0" 200 23 "-" "msnbot/1.0 [more...]

Why You Should Always Have A Web Hosting Exit Strategy

You can test that the website is working correctly by changing the hosts file in the operating system so that it links the new IP to the domain name. Very helpful to test a site before DNS propagation. And since you are waiting for the DNS to propagate you can at least do something useful in the meantime. You can check if the nameservers have been set correctly at web services such as DNS stuff. A traceroute to the domain can also provide the information if the DNS has propagated already.Live chat or calling is often the faster option to resolve a situation. It is a good idea to have the [more...]

Test DNS Server Performance « What's On My PC

Learning Information Technology – a byte at a time! If you been following the tech blogs, there has been a lot of talk about DNS (Domain Naming System) and which DNS nameserver settings to use that will ultimately optimize and make your internet experience faster and safer. For example, instead of using my internet service provider’s default DNS settings, I have opted to the DNS settings from a provider called OpenDNS. OpenDNS is claimed to be faster than your provider’s DNS and has the ability to filter out the bad content, when properly setup. There are other popular DNS services such [more...]

bitplumber.net » Google Recursive DNS Speed Test

So a few days ago Google announced their new public DNS service that will answer recursive queries for any host.  There has been a lot of coverage of this elsewhere so I did not feel compelled to post anything about it until I saw this post discussing how fast Google’s DNS servers were compared to other ISP’s servers.  I felt that I am in a somewhat unique position to provide some test data as I have direct access to an Internet connection from an ISP peered with NWAX which has Google as a member.  The end result of this is that my round trip times to many Google services are 3-4ms. So [more...]

MSNBot Again Failing Reverse DNS Test

Last December, we reported that MSNBot was failing a reverse DNS lookup. Well, guess what folks - MSNBot is failing again on some IP addresses. An updated WebmasterWorld thread brought this to my attention and I verified it myself. DNS usually takes from 12-24 hours to propagate throughtout the internet. Of course sometimes it takes up to 48 hours. Some notes on LTSP client boot speed

I've suspected the ltsp-config.d scripts to look up configuration in LDAP and to dynamically find the correct DNS server to use on clients, and did a simple test. I booted the client, and timed the period from selecting on the PXE menu until the login screen showed up. The times were measured using a wall time clock. First I tried the current version with both LDAP, DNS and extra rw bind mount points enabled. Next I tried to disable both, and then either of them. D-Link doubles security for home networking routers

The security extensions are designed to protect the DNS from cache poisoning attacks, which can occur when hackers corrupt DNS data stored on recursive name servers to redirect queries to malicious sites. DNSSEC applies digital signatures to DNS data to authenticate the data’s origin and verify its integrity as it moves across the Internet and can provide users with effective verification that their applications, such as Web or email, are using the correct addresses for servers they want to reach. In mid-2009, D-Link integrated Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and [more...]

In a lot of cases, you will be dealing with clients who are getting their website for the first time, and there is nothing for you to really consider apart from the hosting solution to set them up on. As time goes on, you will start getting larger clients [more...]

The DNS reverse lookup is visible in the OpenNMS web interface on the node page as “IP Host Name”. An outdated entry here can cause confusion. A way is needed to keep this information up to date.
