Grandparents Can Get Involved With Paternity Testing as Well
Traditionally, we think of paternity testing a something that involves a wronged spouse or a father looking to see if he has a paternal relationship with a particular child, but there are other instances where dna testing is used for the betterment of people as well. DNA Testing We're all familiar with the fact that dna testing is widely used to solve criminal activities as well but one of the places where people might be surprised to find it being implemented is with cases concerning the grandparentage of individuals. Generally, this kind of test is used to determine if two people can be the [more...]

Opportunities and Challenges for the NIH — An Interview with ...
As part of writing this book, I anonymously had my own DNA sampled by the three companies that are doing direct-to-consumer marketing of DNA testing, because there is obviously a lot of interest in all that and I was interested, too. The laboratory side of this seems to work pretty well, because they all got the same genotype. They were not consistent, however, in how they interpreted the results, because the field is moving so quickly. I think all the companies probably overrepresented the degree to which we already can predict people’s future risk of illness and underrepresented how much [more...]

Anglo-Celtic Connections: How many Y-DNA markers to test
According to the FTDNA web site, if you match exactly on 12 markers with someone with the same or variant surname then there is a 99% chance you have a common ancestor within the period in which surnames have been used. Finding that match might motivate you to upgrade. That is just what happened with a man in Australia with the same surname as me. He tested through the Geneographic Project, transferred his information to the FTDNA database. When we found a 12 marker match he decided to upgrade to a 37 marker text. Mouth Swabs Mouth swabs are used to gather DNA samples. Swabs have been used for years in the field of medicine to collect various tissues samples for different types of tests. With advances in the field of genetic testing, oral swabs or mouth swabs have developed which are the standard means for DNA sampling. A mouth swab is very much like cotton bud, which is of course sterile. It is rubbed on the mouth against the cheeks and under the tongue. College kids survive on a diet of beer and pizza, but personalized medicine might soon change that. This summer, UC - Berkeley wants 5,500 new students to participate in a DNA experiment: The students will be required to return a swab of their cheek cells, so they can find out if they have the genes to metabolize folate, lactose, and alcohol. Ideally, the students who lack the genes will modify their behavior accordingly. They would eat more green vegetables, avoid milk products (and prepare to explain to everyone and their mother why they now drink soy milk), and hold back on the drinking. [more...]
