According to the FTDNA web site, if you match exactly on 12 markers with someone with the same or variant surname then there is a 99% chance you have a common ancestor within the period in which surnames have been used. Finding that match might motivate you to upgrade. That is just what happened with a man in Australia with the same surname as me. He tested through the Geneographic Project, transferred his information to the FTDNA database. When we found a 12 marker match he decided to upgrade to a 37 marker text. For anyone with an interest in DNA, whether for anthropology or general [more...]

In August, a 15-seater Dornier aircraft flown by Agni crashed while flying mostly foreign tourists to northern Nepal, killing all the 11 passengers as well as the three-member crew. While the crew had been insured, as per international practice, for $30,000 each, the passengers were insured for $20,000 each and the aircraft for nearly $1.5 million. “On Aug 25, within 24 hours of the crash, our assessors from Singapore flew to Nepal,” says Jagadish Ghosh, NIC’s CEO in Nepal. “The next day, they went to the crash site to assess the situation.” NIC also put in advertisements in [more...]

Ancestry DNA testing in Australia

You will be connected genetically to perhaps such groups as Sub-Saharan, Native American, East Asian or European. Some terms you will come across in your ancestry DNA test: Mutations in DNA A mutation is a permanent change in which the DNA sequence is somehow altered; with these changes come actual changes to the person or to traits. A very short note on mutations; mutations are of course not always harmful- some mutations are very important and very beneficial and enable us and enabled our ancestor to survive in the conditions they lived. Haplotype: A Haplotype is a group of closely linked [more...]

Soft drink additive damages DNA- report_6582

Research indicates that sodium benzoate, an ingredient in many soft drinks and sauces, has the ability to deactivate parts of DNA and eventually cause diseases such as Parkinson’s and cirrhosis of the liver. “My concern is for children who are drinking large amounts,” he said. Sodium benzoate is indicated in Australia as “Preservative (211)” on ingredients lists, and is included in Sunkist, Diet Coke, Sprite, Pepsi Max and many other drinks and condiments. The findings came from laboratory tests conducted with sodium benzoate on living yeast cells. Prof Piper was alarmed by the [more...]

How familial DNA can help crime victims

Using a familial DNA search, the crime lab compared the DNA left at the crime scenes with DNA samples in California's database of 1.3 million felons to search for near matches indicating possible relatives. The familial DNA search turned up 200 partial matches. Researchers then compared the Y chromosome (which is passed from father to son) found at the crime scene to the 200 partial matches. Only one result turned up: Franklin Jr.'s son, who had been convicted of a felony weapons charge. The police subsequently surveilled Franklin Jr. and directly connected him to the serial killings using [more...]
