Technology Review: A Genetic Christmas Story
Some people may have received an unusual gift this holiday season: an ancestry testing kit that uses a small swab of DNA to shed light on near and ancient family history. It sounds, at first, like a novelty item. But the kit may provide long-term assistance to scientists who are hoping to track the history of the human race. In one project, spearheaded by National Geographic Society and IBM, participants buy a kit for $99.95, scrape some skin cells from the inside of their cheek, and send the samples in for analysis. Once the DNA is processed, participants learn their haplogroup -- the [more...]

Can You Cheat In DNA Paternity Test?
DNA Paternity Test is the recent most widely used method of confirming a biological relationship of a supposed father to a child. There are two ways to perform the said test: 1. Court Admissible Test. This is a collection of samples and is performed through a controlled chain-of-custody procedure with a third party to act as a witness and verify the authenticity of the samples. Obviously this is a cheat proof system if a neutral and qualified third party witness is considered. 2. At-Home DNA Paternity Test. DNA Testing kit is usually sent at home and the person involved is responsible for [more...]

Can an Indian DNA Test Find or Prove Native American Ancestry?
Their admixture report attempts to separate Asian ancestry into Indigenous American and East Asian components. This could be more useful for an Indian DNA test. But the population data is from relatively small samples. So the accuracy can be severely limited by statistical noise.NOTE: Those who have been around DNA testing for awhile will recognize this as the old DNA Print test licensed to a different company. DNA TribesAnother possibility for an Indian DNA test is DNA Tribes. They use a set of 21 autosomal markers, including the CODIS markers used by police in forensic investigations. [more...]

Who Owns Your DNA?
... that's the question posed by Consumer's Union (publishers of Consumer Reports)... which then goes on to discuss consumer gene tests and the problems with their results - barely mentioning that question of who owns our DNA. The article is an excellent overview of the problem with over-the-counter DNA testing kits, which we actually looked at several months ago when the FDA made Walgreens pull gene testing kits off their shelves. The reason they were pulled was because their accuracy can't be tested. In fact, one analysis showed that using one DNA sample, three different tests for the [more...]

Home DNA Tests: Proposed New rules : : Healthcare News
A set of new rules and guidelines have been put forward by Human Genetics Commission (HGC) to crack down on inaccurate and harmful home do-it-yourself DNA tests freely sold over the internet. Many private companies, based mainly in the US, offer such direct to consumer testing kits that estimate a person’s risk of suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s or breast cancer, by analyzing the genetic codes. Paternity testing or finding out the identity of the father is another reason as to why these tests are gaining in popularity. The Commission has expressed its reservations about [more...]

Home Genetic Testing for Alzheimer's?
That fact is even more important now that Walgreens is close to selling a home genetic testing kit that the Washington Post reported on Tuesday can scan genes for a propensity for Alzheimer's disease, breast cancer, diabetes and other ailments. The testing kit, marketed by Pathway Genomics, involves sending in a saliva sample to produce a DNA sample that is tested for genetic markers. The FDA acted quickly in criticizing the kit as lacking in safety, efficacy, and accuracy, and Walgreens announced yesterday that is postponing sales of the kit. In Alzheimer's disease, genetic testing is only [more...]

DNA, home testing and fuzzy human rights « UK Human Rights Blog
It is therefore not difficult to imagine the issue of DNA home-testing coming before the courts. If accuracy improves on testing for diseases, it might be argued that a home-test kit should be provided for free on the NHS, or even at schools as this falls under the state’s basic duty to protect life under Article 2 of the European Convention. From an Article 8 perspective, if, contrary to the HGC recommendations, parents start to test their children’s DNA when there is no specific clinical need, rights groups may seek to judicially review the currently laissez-faire regulation of the [more...]

Most companies provide a free home kit for you to provide the samples and require you to send the kit back to the laboratory with the accompanying fee. Because many companies are aware of the discomfort of drawing blood from a child in order to get a sample, buccal (mouth) swabs are being accepted as an alternative. By gently massaging the inside of the child's mouth, cheek cells are collected. These cells are then sent to the lab for testing. [more...]
