Herbal News Magazine | Walgreens Plans to Sell a DNA Test Shelved

Walgreens, one of the fastest growing, and my personally favorite drugstore chain, has decided to put plans on hold for selling a new DNA saliva swab kit that they were planning to sell in their stores, probably bringing them to the forefront as the only drugstore chain to sell such a unique product. Why would people want a test like this, you ask? Well, DNA testing is becoming more and more popular as a way to detect whether you have damaged DNA and might be more likely to contract different diseases, or even be more prone to things like breast cancer and other inherited types of disease. I [more...]

Paternity Prenatal Testing

Clients who wish to determine paternity during pregnancy may opt for a Prenatal Paternity test, similar to normal DNA paternity test, the prenatal test analyses the baby’s DNA with that of the alleged father. The baby’s DNA is established at conception; a prenatal test gives the same conclusive results as a normal paternity test. I must make it clear that a prenatal sample collection is done at the discretion of the gynecologist. This is done because prenatal sample collection poses significant risk to both mother and baby. I recommend counseling with a medical doctor prior to prenatal [more...]

DNA Paternity Test Question, Biology wizards please answer

I asked this question in the pregnancy section and got little joy. What I want to know is could a dna paternity test result by buccal swab be wrong if done in a. ... Of course there is human error, but in all likelihood that would cause the results to be inconclusive, not show a positive or negative result to a certain percentage. Same with contaminants in the specimen. Not all tests are 99.99, it may be 99.98 or 98.9 or 98.5 or some other similarly high result, [more...]

DNA testing acquits an Innocent man from Rape conviction

Certain portions of DNA are unique to each individual. This genetic information cannot be purposely altered in any way. DNA profiling is a way of establishing identity and is used in a variety of ways, such as for determining twins to be identical or fraternal, and for many other family-relationship identifications. DNA samples can be obtained from blood, buccal swab, hair root, saliva, semen and much more. Because no two individuals (with the exception of identical twins) are composed of the exact same genetic profile, DNA testing is the absolute means to confirm any biological relationship [more...]

Consumer Reports Health Blog: Who owns your DNA?

The costs of direct-to-consumer gene tests have been falling, and for under $1000 and a cheek swab or saliva sample, you can learn about a specific trait or disease risk, or get a profile of your whole genome and what it might mean according to current science. But making these tests more readily available to consumers hit some roadblocks in the last few months, when Pathways Genomics delayed plans to market the tests in Walgreens after receiving a letter from the FDA, and the University of California at Berkeley also withdrew its plan to offer individual gene analysis of three traits to [more...]

Daytona Beach Cops Use Serial Killer as Excuse to take and record ...

Taking a DNA sample using a cheek swab is a Fourth Amendment search that would normally require a warrant. See Kohler v. Englade, 470 F.3d 1104 (5th Cir. 2006). It certainly looks like the police don't have warrants here. The question then becomes if some exception to the warrant requirement applies to make the cheek swab reasonable. It may be that the officers are only asking targets for consent to give up a DNA sample. If that's the case, the swabs are constitutional under the consent exception. It also may be that the officers are only getting cheek swabs when they arrest someone. If [more...]

Can You Cheat In DNA Paternity Test?

DNA Paternity Test is the recent most widely used method of confirming a biological relationship of a supposed father to a child. There are two ways to perform the said test: 1. Court Admissible Test. This is a collection of samples and is performed through a controlled chain-of-custody procedure with a third party to act as a witness and verify the authenticity of the samples. Obviously this is a cheat proof system if a neutral and qualified third party witness is considered. 2. At-Home DNA Paternity Test. DNA Testing kit is usually sent at home and the person involved is responsible for [more...]

Paternity Blood Test | Diet and Health Tips & Products Reviews

Today, the most accurate tests (99.99%) to determine the paternity of a child are made through DNA. Collecting DNA sample is done two ways: Buccal swab (swabbing the inside of the cheek) and blood samples. Known as PCR (polymerase chain reaction), the procedure is used in comparing samples of the childís DNA with that of the alleged father. Since the childís DNA is a fairly equal combination of DNA of his parents, excluding the DNA of the mother gives us a genetic profile of the biological father. However, before science knew how to isolate DNA, blood samples were the standard in a variety [more...]

Test Your DNA as Part of National Geographic and IBM's Unique Genographic Project When it comes to our roots, most of us think we know where our early ancestors came from – the continent if not the country. Most people have clear ideas on their nationality and they see it as a defining part of themselves and their identity. The Genographic Project, launched by National Geographic, IBM and scientist Dr Spencer Wells, seeks to challenge what we think we know about our very distant past - and our very notions of who we are. Studies of DNA have suggested that all humans today are descended from [more...]

Article Snack » Where To Learn More About Proof Of Paternity

Using the coming of DNA testing these days, paternity can be established with almost 100% accuracy. Except for identical twins, your DNA is as distinctive as your fingerprint. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) denotes your genetic makeup like the color of your hair and eyes, skin color, height, and others. The youngster gets 50% of his DNA from his mum and also the other half derives from his dad. Comparing the child’s DNA with that in the biological mom will get rid of the genes inherited from her. What remains are the DNA of the father. A comparison of probes between the father, mother and [more...]

Paternity Testing - Are You Raising Someone Else's Child? - Hackerwap

Because many companies are aware of the discomfort of drawing blood from a child in order to get a sample, buccal (mouth) swabs are being accepted as an alternative. By gently massaging the inside of the child's mouth, cheek cells are collected. These cells are then sent to the lab for testing. [more...]
