In 1953, the molecular structure of DNA was discovered by Watson and Francis Crick. Since then, one of the most amazing discoveries in genetic research has been the multitudes of protein machines that repair DNA. Recently, a “fundamentally new” DNA repair mechanism was discovered by researchers at Vanderbilt University!  Science Daily describes it this way, “Tucked within its double-helix structure, DNA contains the chemical blueprint that guides all the processes that take place within the cell and are essential for life.  Therefore, repairing damage and maintaining the integrity of [more...]

How DNA is Used in Paternity Testing?

Recently, companies have begun selling DNA paternity tests over the counter at drug stores, which facilitates home testing. However, results are usually inadmissible in court due to the chance of surreptitious DNA collection or false identification of the tested individuals. The legality of testing another person’s DNA without their consent varies by state. If a paternity test is to be used in a court of law, chain of custody of the DNA sample must be verified. This means that every step of the paternity testing process and analysis is documented, from the collection of the DNA sample by an [more...]

Mystery liverwort fungus, chapter 4 :Cornell Mushroom Blog

To be certain, we should repeat the DNA isolation and sequencing and see if we get the same answer. In these four posts, we have gone once around the loop: found a fungus, looked at it, tried to culture it, dived into the literature, sequenced some DNA and we have come up empty. We could either give up… or we could describe this fungus now as a new genus and species. But I am not satisfied. We will go around the loop again… and my Friday afternoon diversion is invading the rest of the week. The Mermaid's Tale: Direct-to-consumer genetic testing -- again

have increased greatly in living memory.  That's environment, not genes!  Even breast cancer risk fluctuates, even for people with the high risk alleles, depending on when a carrier was born.  Genetic effects depend on context.  Yet knowing as we do that the effect of context can change we know that we don't know the future environmental exposures -- and hence the future risks associated with the same genotypes.  Many or most DTC risk estimates are, quite literally, passé. So, again as we've said before, regulation of what these companies is selling is a legal issue that must be [more...]
