Crime Lab's DNA Machine Unplugged for Six Years – Mission Loc@l ...

The lab has come under attack because of a backlog of untested DNA samples. The machine in use tests one sample at a time. Although Hammer said the newer, unused machine will be incorporated in an ongoing IT project that will be finished in eight months, it’s already somewhat out of date, according to its manufacturer. The machine is an ABI Prism 3100 that was purchased in 2004 for $139,587.67, according to Lee Woo, an accounting manager for the city. It’s sold by Life Technologies and was discontinued in 2007. The replacement costs around $200,000, according to Zabi Habibi, a salesman. [more...]

Boston Paternity | Immigration DNA testing in Ghana – USCIS has ...

DNA testing in Ghana has been taking weeks longer than normal. One of the reasons for this is that scheduling for DNA tests has been split up between USCIS and DHS cases. It appears that new procedures are intact and DNA collections will begin moving smoothly. You can read the new DNA testing instructions for Ghana below: The beneficiaries should appear at the USCIS Accra Office at 7:30 am on any MONDAY or TUESDAY during the months of July and August 2010 for DNA sample collection.  The USCIS Accra Office is located at the US Embassy premises at No. 24 Fourth Circular Road, East Cantonments, [more...]

Paternity Testing: Are You Raising Someone Else's Child?

Even without a sample from the mother, DNA paternity test results are up to 99.9999% accuratethats one-in-a-million odds your results are incorrect. Most companies provide a free home kit for you to provide the samples and require you to send the kit back to the laboratory with the accompanying fee. Because many companies are aware of the discomfort of drawing blood from a child in order to get a sample, buccal (mouth) swabs are being accepted as an alternative. By gently massaging the inside of the childs mouth, cheek cells are collected. These cells are then sent to the lab for testing. [more...]

In 2004, DNA analysis first helped forensic anthropologist Dr. Bruce Anderson give a family answers about one young woman who disappeared while crossing illegally into Arizona. “It showed everyone in our office that there’s nothing we can’t do to try to identify a person,” Anderson said. “If it’s only one bone, if we can get some clue to who that person is, the family can contribute a saliva sample and the DNA lab can make that comparison.” Since that case, which led to a family in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner has used DNA to [more...]

23andMe Sends Wrong DNA Test Results To 96 Customers

Sending your spit sample to a startup may not seem like such a good idea, after all. On Friday, 23andMe, the company that allows consumers to get portions of their genome tested for a relatively modest fee, announced that “a number of new 23andMe customer samples were incorrectly processed” by the lab 23andMe contracts” to carry out its tests. This resulted in “up to 96″ customers receiving DNA results that were not their own — a major mistake that led to some very confused customers, and will doubtless help bolster the push to increase regulation for direct-to-consumer genetic [more...]

Questions to Ask Your DNA Testing Laboratory – DNA Tests

Un-accredited labs do not have to abide by any standards and, therefore, may not offer the best service and most accurate tests. Of the hundreds of laboratories advertising DNA testing services worldwide, only 41 are currently AABB accredited. Do you outsource testing? Many of the companies you will come across through online searches are actually brokers, not laboratories. Since brokers do not perform the testing themselves, they must send your information and samples to a third party laboratory. Some brokers may work with reputable laboratories, but others do not. The Murder of Jessica Hawk | News | Gambit New Orleans

DNA swabs and samples were sent to Baton Rouge. Horvitz and Hawk's family waited more than six months for the results, which found only Hawk's DNA at the scene. Homicide detective Winston Harbin says there was no indication of forced entry. "From our point of view, the forensic team didn't do a good job," says Ivonne Garzon, Hawk's friend and an activist for a DNA lab in New Orleans. "We asked about fingerprints, fingernails, (NOPD) said there was no evidence. Her apartment was small. We don't understand how someone could break in and not leave a trace." Fallible DNA evidence can mean prison or freedom, would you trust ...

False peaks in the profile created by imperfections in the analysis machine may also be mistaken for alleles. This is called "drop-in". This year, the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM), which issues guidance to US labs performing forensic DNA analysis, published new recommendations regarding the interpretation of forensic DNA. These include a suggestion that labs develop strict criteria for deciding what denotes the presence of an allele, and what amount of DNA constitutes the minimum for a profile to be constructed. Labs should also document and define any [more...]

Genetic DNA Testing, The Use And Benefits

Due to recent advances in scientific knowledge and high technology, DNA genetic testing is now developed and commonly used by most people. DNA test is relatively used for paternity analysis of various genetic diseases during pregnancy and for forensic investigations. Paternity tests are used to determine who is the biological father of a child. Sometimes, when parents do not know about the paternity of a child, this can affect their relationships and peace of mind, governed by the father of DNA testing. State labs chip away at DNA testing backlog | California Watch

California law enforcement agencies have received $43 million in federal cash since 2004 to reduce the state’s DNA testing backlog. That figure – from the U.S. Justice Department’s DNA Initiative – is far more than any other state collected, with Texas coming in second with $30 million in funding. Not everyone’s a proponent of such efforts. Christopher Heaney and Sara Huston Katsanis, researchers at Duke University’s Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, argue that targeting arrestees' DNA can be a misallocation of resources that, interestingly, ensures more money in the [more...]

HPV DNA Test for Cervical Cancer

According to Lab Tests Online, the HPV DNA test still requires a sample of cells from the cervix. It is NOT a blood test. I emphasize this point because most of the news I’ve seen either got it wrong or didn’t clarify the testing procedure. For most people, DNA tests still mean a blood test even though DNA can be extracted from other samples, such as the ubiquitous cheek swab. Currently, the HPV DNA test is used in combination with the traditional pap smear. However, recent studies have shown that HPV testing may be used alone and make it possible for women to prolong the time between [more...]

Zygosity Testing for Twins | Advance DNA Paternity Lab

Sometimes twins try to play tricks on us. Some identical twins act as if they are fraternal, while some fraternal twins appear to act more like identical twins, but how can you be sure? Usually the distinction is made at birth as identical twins share a placenta, while fraternal twins do not, although the opposite has been known to happen in rare instances. This occurs because identical twins are created from one fertilized egg, known as a zygote, that splits and forms two embryos, while fraternal twins occur when individual sperms fertilize two eggs during ovulation, and because of the [more...]
