DNA Testing of MLB Prospects Continues Under New Rules
After it was revealed last year that investigators for Major League Baseball were using DNA testing on teenage prospects and their parents to verify the players’ ages to combat identity fraud, genetic experts roundly criticized the practice and raised questions about its legality. In response, baseball halted the practice. The investigators have begun using DNA testing again but are doing so under new guidelines, according to baseball officials. Prospects and their families are now invited to submit additional information — including documents, photos, medical records and DNA testing [more...]

Cancer-death on your doorstep ! | Health For You
The DNA is inserted into the host DNA where it may stay and be replicated for generation of cells. HIV is a harmful reterovirus and other reteroviruses cause cancer. These contain a gene which alters host cell division genes, switching them on and causing the cell to become malignant. ->DNA viruses contain DNA as their hereditary material. Some contain their own oncogenes which can cause uncontrolled cell division of host cells. ->Hereditary predisposition. About 5% of human cancers show a strong genetic predisposition. Onur the NEC Flim Flam Man
The following is not directly related to Hippocrates/Lynn, but since their "take" on the Italian issue is similar to Onur trying to Turkify/Levantify S.Italians (and Greeks, etc.), there is some relevance. Regarding (essentially self-described) “causasoidist” “Onur”(*) and the “DNA Tribes” nonsense, a small number of forensic STRs cannot give accurate results for ancestry determination. Synthetic DNA purification process developed by Shiyue Fang, Michigan Tech Chemistry Department image July 22, 2010— Birds do it, bees do it. Even scientists in labs do it. But the scientists can’t hold a candle to the birds and the bees, who can make gobs of primo DNA without even thinking about it.DNA is a critical element of gene therapy, and scientists working to develop cures for diseases make it with synthesizers. Unfortunately, synthesizers don’t do nearly as good a job as cells in stringing nucleic acids together to make DNA, and many of the resulting sequences—called [more...]

Tracing Birth Parents by Testing Your DNA
The tests can even distinguish a half sibling from a full sibling. If you followed my advice and used both Family Finder and Relative Finder, you can test the suspected relative with whichever test costs less. Both should do a good job of confirming a close relationship. NOTE: Do not count on a Y-DNA test for close relationship testing. While Y-DNA matches definitely share a common paternal ancestor, the test can only tie you to a family, not to any one person. Mitochondrial DNA? Both men and women can also take a mitochondrial (mtDNA) test that follows the maternal line. But learning [more...]

We live in a strange country « SplitFocus
Fewer than a third can identify DNA as a key to heredity. One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century. I find this very depressing. But also very strange, given that 4 in 5 American adults believe science education is “absolutely essential” or “very important” for US healthcare, global reputation, and economy. How can these both be true? My hero, Carl Sagan, explained it eloquently here. He got off a plane once and took a cab with someone who was very excited to find out he was riding with “that science [more...]

There is something to forensic science. The Innocence Project has won release of people wrongly convicted of crimes by demonstrating that DNA samples taken at the crime scenes did not match the DNA of the wrongly convicted people. (We see this often in murder and rape cases in which there is a lot of public pressure for police to solve the crimes.) Yet such methods are not confined to the defense. Prosecutors for years have enlisted DNA and other forensic devices to help gain convictions. For example, prosecutors used analysis of wood slivers to help convict Bruno Hauptmann more than 70 years [more...]
