Blog Carnival – DNA in turmoil in Australia - Human Rights in Ireland

But what is clear is that the nation’s justice institutions have become newly wary. The government of New South Wales, one of the first to join Australia’s national DNA database, stopped receiving DNA from some jurisdictions because of concerns (fueled partly by the Leskie case) about the databasing of victims’ DNA. Victoria Police responded to its most recent debacle by taking the stunning (and somewhat baffling) step of suspending all DNA testimony for a few months, reportedly to refine statistical protocols. Although such testimony has since resumed, prosecutions based solely on [more...]

Ireland's provisional DNA – The Irish Times – Sat, Sep 11, 2010

Scientists have mapped the DNA of an Irish person – an anonymous male volunteer – for the first time. Now the challenge is to find out which of the 300,000 previously unrecorded genetic variations is unique to, or typical of, Ireland. We predict some of the findings. CH1 The CH1 gene variant gives rise to a condition, believed to affect countless thousands of Irish people, known as “cute hoorism”. Sufferers have unusually sensitive skin, capable of identifying which way the wind is blowing, even when there’s no wind. By contrast, certain areas of the body – typically the neck – [more...]

Reading DNA test results | Iranian.com

I've been getting my DNA test results in bits and pieces. Remember I did the test? Companies like Family Tree DNA claim they can dig up your ancestral background. Well, so far I haven't learned much. I mean there's a lot of information but I'm not sure how relevant it is. For one thing, the test show almost no genetic links in Iran. I'm three-quarters Iranian (Iranian father, half-Iranian half-American mother). So how is that possible? The only explanation is that the genetic pool available to the testers does not include many Iranians to compare their DNA to mine. The tests show I have "full [more...]

Since DNA evidence is not available in the majority of murder cases, other wrongful convictions based on similar types of evidence may never come to light.Perhaps we could extend this logic to "far lighter tasks" like bombing foreign capitals. The FTC is working on new regulations to prevent greenwashing. Among the proposed changes: Marketers shouldn't use labels like "green" or "eco-friendly" because they're too vague; if something's labeled as "biodegradable," then the entire package should "completely break down and return to nature" within a year; and if something's called "non-toxic" it [more...]

Eventually with the development of DNA testing and a few miracles, she proved beyond a doubt that her brother was innocent and, worse, that the police withheld evidence that proved his innocence! She is played onscreen by Hilary Swank and Kenny by Sam Rockwell.  They are titanic performances.  Betty Ann called seeing the film the first time “surreal” and cried through it all.  She still cries easily; you jump so many hurdles that when you’re jumping them one by one it just seems it is what you do but when it’s over the realization of what you’ve lived through is sobering.  It [more...]

The Vision of the Solid Rock Church

To help us understand this, it might be useful to think of our Solid Rock DNA.  What is it that makes us unique as a Church?  If Gil Grissom and the guys in the CSI lab could examine our DNA, what would mark us out as being different from most other churches? In fact, as I’ve prayed about this, I feel the Holy Spirit is directing us to break every rule of vision-casting in ‘The Church Growth Handbook.’  Church Visions, apparently, should use alliteration (every word starting with the same letter) or should form punchy acronyms (like I-M-P-A-C-T).  But why?  Why do we have to treat [more...]

Cancer-death on your doorstep ! | Health For You

The DNA is inserted into the host DNA where it may stay and be replicated for generation of cells. HIV is a harmful reterovirus and other reteroviruses cause cancer. These contain a gene which alters host cell division genes, switching them on and causing the cell to become malignant. ->DNA viruses contain DNA as their hereditary material. Some contain their own oncogenes which can cause uncontrolled cell division of host cells. ->Hereditary predisposition. About 5% of human cancers show a strong genetic predisposition. Legendary Leaders and Ancestry

AfricanAncestry.com, the pioneers of DNA-based ancestry tracing for African Americans, recently revealed the paternal roots of King and Garvey through their sons — Martin Luther King III and Dr. Julius Garvey respectively – during a special DNA Reveal Dinner hosted by the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation’s African Policy Summit in Atlanta on Sept. 26. For the King Family, AfricanAncestry.com’s results complement the paper-trail research they’ve done on Dr. King’s paternal side, which traces to Ireland.  Martin Luther King III’s test also revealed his mother’s line, the late [more...]

DNA test used to find out rescue dog's breeds |

DNA Testing for Dogs! What a brilliant idea. About 6 months ago I took in a lovely dog from Heathlands Animal Sanctuary in Royston. I wasn’t looking to have any more dogs as I was quite happy with my two King Charles Spaniels, but when I went onto the Heathlands website and saw the plight of some of these rescued dogs brought over from an awful existence in Ireland I had to have a look – and there she was! Within two days Ciara was home with us and getting to know Molly and Meka and thankfully all are great friends. She was quite thin and traumatised. After only 2 days she managed to [more...]

Couple Shocked To Find Out They Are Half Siblings | The Frisky

The pair, who have a young son, recently confirmed through DNA testing that they are each other’s half-siblings. Understandably, the couple has chosen to remain anonymous and go by fake names in the press, fearing how public knowledge of the news would affect their son. It was discovered that things were a little too all in the family for James and his girlfriend Maura when James reconnected with his estranged mother and started telling her about his long-term girlfriend. Once the mother learned the full name of Maura’s father, Tom, she confessed to her son that the dad he was raised [more...]
