TRENDBIRD (What's Next Big Thing ?) :: Doggy DNA Is A Growing Business
The system, called PooPrints, collects saliva swabs from every dog in a participating area and registers the DNA in a central database. When residents find dog droppings, they mail them to BioPet. Technicians then match the DNA to reveal the offending owner. Boyd, 71, charges $29.95 for each pet he enrolls and $49.95 per poop test. "There's a major problem with dog crap, especially where kids play," he says. "It's a health hazard." At least one property manager is skeptical. PLoS ONE: Analysis of Short Tandem Repeats by Parallel DNA Threading
Abstract TopThe majority of studies employing short tandem repeats (STRs) require investigation of several of these genetic markers. As such, we demonstrate the feasibility of the trinucleotide threading (TnT) approach for scalable analysis of STRs. The TnT method represents a parallel amplification alternative that addresses the obstacles associated with multiplex PCR. In this study, analysis of the STR fragments was performed with capillary gel electrophoresis; however, it should be possible to combine our approach with the massive 454 sequencing platform to considerably increase the [more...]

Has anyone used a canine DNA test …? Has anyone successfully used one of these DNA identification of career? Not to determine paternity, but to see what kind of mixed race that is. If so, what type it was and how much? I used the kit BioPet a couple of times. Both times it was on sale at amazon.com for $ 35.00. Probably not pay much more, given the limitations of these tests. If you try, keep in mind that these tests can not detect certain races (a list raised the manufacturers site.) If the result is a dog that turns out to be something that is not in its database of race, get skewed [more...]

(BLOG) - Lifestyle in Computers: Exonerating the innocent: using ...
As with normal fingerprints, governments around the world have built a database of DNA fingerprints since the late 1980s. DNA often is found on the crime scene in the form of bodily fluids, such as blood. Using these samples, DNA can be compared in a laboratory using gel electrophoresis, which uses a magnetic field to separate the strands of DNA. Unfortunately, especially in the early history of DNA fingerprinting, mistakes were often made. It is estimated that one tenth of a percent of DNA comparisons are incorrectly done. This may not seem like a lot, but considering that there are more [more...]

How DNA is Used in Paternity Testing?
Recently, companies have begun selling DNA paternity tests over the counter at drug stores, which facilitates home testing. However, results are usually inadmissible in court due to the chance of surreptitious DNA collection or false identification of the tested individuals. The legality of testing another person’s DNA without their consent varies by state. If a paternity test is to be used in a court of law, chain of custody of the DNA sample must be verified. This means that every step of the paternity testing process and analysis is documented, from the collection of the DNA sample by an [more...]

We are curious to find out what mix of breeds that others might be, but the comments I read in these DNA tests are so extreme. This paper addresses a key challenge for DNA strand sequencing: fine control of the translocation of the DNA strand through the nanopore, at a rate that is consistent and slow enough to enable accurate identification of individual DNA bases. The Nature Nanotechnology work shows for the first time that the motion of a strand can be controlled using electronic feedback and that an enzyme can move a strand against a field while located on top of the nanopore. "The techniques described in this paper are an advance towards electronic, single molecule DNA sequencing of DNA strands" said [more...]

Activation of DNA damage checkpoint pathways, including Chk2, serves as an anticancer barrier in precancerous lesions. In an effort to identify small-molecule activators of Chk2, the authors developed a quantitative cell-based assay using a high-content analysis (HCA) platform. Induction of phosphorylated Chk2 was evaluated using several different parameters, including fold induction, Kolmogorov-Smirnov score, and percentage of positively stained cells. These measurements were highly correlated and provided an accurate method for compound ranking/binning, structure-activity relationship [more...]

Certain portions of DNA are unique to each individual. This genetic information cannot be purposely altered in any way. DNA profiling is a way of establishing identity and is used in a variety of ways, such as for determining twins to be identical or fraternal, and for many other family-relationship identifications. DNA samples can be obtained from blood, buccal swab, hair root, saliva, semen and much more. Because no two individuals (with the exception of identical twins) are composed of the exact same genetic profile, DNA testing is the absolute means to confirm any biological relationship [more...]
