DNA Gel Extraction Kit

The DNA Gel Extraction Kit is designed for the rapid purification of DNA fragments from agarose gels. The kit allows for the removal of agarose, enzymes, dNTPs, ethidium bromide, dyes and detergents from the DNA fragment. The recovered DNA is of a high quality, and is suitable for a number of downstream applications including restriction enzyme digestions, ligations, labeling, hybridizations and sequencing. The kit employs the use of a proprietary resin for DNA purification. This resin is an extremely inert and stable substance and is able to preferentially bind nucleic acids in the presence [more...]

Human remains identified as those of Alice Donovan | SCNOW

The remains werefirst sent to a lab at the University of South Carolina for possible mitochondrial DNA extraction and testing. But forensic scientists at the state crime lab weren’t able to pull enough DNA from the skeletal remains for a positive identification. The Horry County Police Department since had been in contact with the Health Science Center at the University of North Texas, where the remains — along with DNA swabs taken during the Jan. 27 search from Gilchrist and Warner — were sent for additional testing, Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler said. Most of the search for [more...]

DNAction » Pathway Launches an Extended Carrier Status Screening ...

Traditionally, pregnancy-related genetic testing has been limited to prospective parents whose family history or ethnicity suggests that they may be at an increased risk for a particular genetic disease. One example of this is genetic screening for Tay-Sachs disease mutations in people of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. The problem with this approach is that it relies on self-reported ethnicity and family history, which can be incomplete or misleading. Additionally, the ethnic distribution and prevalence of many genetic disease-causing mutations is not known. The Simple Solution Using only a [more...]

Preserving The Dna Of Endangered Species With The Natural History ...

Hi all, I wanted to tell you about some of the interesting new work I’ve been doing with the Natural History Museum in London. This new project is really an extension of the studies I’ve been doing in DNA sequencing. My team at Global Research, along with GE Healthcare and the Museum, are now trying to improve methods of obtaining DNA from fresh and preserved historical samples of endangered species (like the giant squid you see below) in order to learn more about them. In the past the team has worked on methods to enzymatically amplify specimen DNA, long term preservation of samples, and [more...]

Biologists Tackle Cells' Identity Crisis

The group has now developed and tested a standardized procedure for extracting DNA from cells, doing the fingerprinting and interpreting the results.“Without policing, many investigators may not be motivated to do the necessary tests.” Many researchers already use DNA fingerprinting to test their cell lines, notes Steve Oglesbee, director of the tissue-culture facility at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The ATCC and other repositories have already established fingerprints for some of the most commonly used lines. "We're [more...]

DNA: Size Does Matter. But is it Science or Art? « Exploratorium ...

Then I randomly found this website, which starts with the same idea as our DNA Cheek Cell Extraction Demo but takes it to a whole new level:  You send your cheek cells in the mail to their company.  They extract your DNA from your cells, then use PCR to amplify unique sections of DNA in your genome.  This DNA is loaded into a gel and a current is run through the gel to separate the DNA based on size.  UV dye is added to the whole thing to make your DNA strands visible, a photograph is taken, and voila!…a giant canvas print with the color scheme of your choice is ready to hang on your [more...]

March 12, 2010: DNA EXTRACTION LAB

Students extracted DNA from wheat germ by using hot water, detergent, and isopropyl alcohol.  Hot water was used to denature DNase (an enzyme that cuts up DNA).   Detergent was used to remove the protein and lipids that make up the membrane of the cell.  This will help the cell as well the nucleus break apart, allowing the DNA to be released.  Detergent works well here, the same way it works to remove protein and fat off of your dishes at home.  Since DNA is not soluble in alcohol, the DNA will seperate from the solution and become [more...]

DNa Extraction

Precipitating the DNA with an alcohol — usually ethanol or isopropanol. Since DNA is insoluble in these alcohols, it will aggregate together, giving a pellet on centrifugation. This step also removes alcohol-soluble salt. Refinements of the technique include adding a chelating agent to sequester divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+. This stops dnase enzymes from degrading the DNA. Cellular and histone proteins bound to the DNA can be removed prior to its precipitation either by adding a protease or having prior to precipitation, precipitating with sodium or ammonium acetate, or [more...]

HPV DNA Test for Cervical Cancer

According to Lab Tests Online, the HPV DNA test still requires a sample of cells from the cervix. It is NOT a blood test. I emphasize this point because most of the news I’ve seen either got it wrong or didn’t clarify the testing procedure. For most people, DNA tests still mean a blood test even though DNA can be extracted from other samples, such as the ubiquitous cheek swab. Currently, the HPV DNA test is used in combination with the traditional pap smear.
