Florida Issues: Prosecutors agree to go beyond the toothbrush with ...

WEST PALM BEACH — Prosecutors about-faced Wednesday and agreed to DNA testing of some key evidence in the acase of Esdras Cardona, a Guatemalan dishwasher sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of a fellow employee at the Everglades Club in Palm Beach. In what is known as the "toothbrush case," 34-year-old Cardona is linked in part to Melissa Legare's rape by a Colgate toothbrush found in her room that bore a virtually exact match to Cardona's DNA. Cardona, identified confidently by Legare as her rapist, denies any part in the crime, and Innocence Project of Florida attorneys have [more...]

Xiang-Jun's Corner: Further details of the DNA story revealed by ...

I read Watson's "The Double Helix" book a while ago, and overall I am quite familiar with the DNA story. Still, I found this account fascinating: it provides a "CAST LIST" in "The search for the structure of DNA" with photos (p521); and it succinctly summarizes the relationships among the key players. In science, no other story shows more dramatically the collaborative and competitive nature among scientists working on similar projects. Franklin’s X-ray diffraction photograph 51 of B-form DNA (see figure above, from Wikipedia), with its unambiguous evidence that DNA was helical, proved [more...]

Her Brother's Keeper | Courtroom Strategy by Attorney Oscar Michelen

When the State told her all evidence containing DNA had been destroyed, she pursued it relentlessly until finally some remaining evidence was discovered.  She then enlisted Barry Scheck and his Innocence Project for assistance. With their  help, the DNA was tested and established with certainty Kenny’s innocence: after 18 years in jail, he was freed. After he got out, having handled precisely one case, she gave up the practice of law and is still working at Aidan’s, the same pub she was at when she started her crusade. How many siblings would do what Betty Anne did? Through the process, [more...]

Ten Years of Education: The History Center | West Orlando News ...

Confession: I haven’t spent much time in downtown Orlando. That’s something I’ll have to fix. The city is beautiful, plants and trees everywhere, and the free Lynx LYMMO service looping around town makes it easy to get around. One of their stops is the Orange County Regional History Center. I was lucky enough to tour it last weekend in honor of the museum’s tenth anniversary. The History Center isn’t just a museum, it’s housed in a piece of living history. The building itself is five-story courthouse dating from 1927. You can see a little of the place’s background in the [more...]

The Crime Report » Archive » High Court Hears Test On Limits Of ...

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court said only a very narrow window is available to defendants seeking access to evidence for DNA testing post-conviction. The ruling had a limited impact because 48 states have enacted laws that provide for access in some circumstances. Today, reports NPR, the high court hears the next round in the DNA drama — a case testing whether the Texas statute is so limited that it denies a defendant due process of law. Hank Skinner was 45 minutes away from execution when the Supreme Court granted a stay to hear his case. He was sentenced to die for murdering his [more...]

Cheek swab for lung cancer: breakthrough in biomedical optics ...

Not only can nanocytology help detect cancer early, it can shed light on the fact that these small changes in the cell structure are very telling. Changes in the DNA are also very revealing. For decades, scientists have known that smoking causes cancer because it damages the DNA. Now British researchers have uncovered the link between smoking and epigenetic changes in DNA. “Until now, however, there has been no direct evidence that smoking induces DNA methylation in humans,” Cancer Research UK Institute of Cancer Studies Dr Yuk Ting Ma said in a statement. “DNA methylation is a type of [more...]

Genome Size, Code Bloat, And Proof-by-analogy

For a process of inter-lineage sorting to affect genome size more generally, large amounts of non-coding DNA would have to be insufficiently detrimental in the short term to be removed by organism-level selection, and would have to improve lineage survival and/or enhance speciation rates, such that over time one would observe a world dominated by lineages with huge genomes. In principle, this would be compatible with the conclusions of the model under discussion, at least in broad outline. In practice, however, this is undone by evidence that lineages with exorbitant genomes are restricted to [more...]
