The street value of prescription medications have steadily increased and the ease of getting prescription medications have also increased due to generic low cost alternatives. For example, take Xanax. One can acquire a bottle of generic Xanax for approximately $4.50 from any major pharmacy in the US. Each pill has a street value of approximately $5-10 dollars. This is scary! What is more astounding is that there are so many prescriptions written each year where the bottles generally go untouched! They also write that some private DNA tests, which are marketed with the promise of predicting the user's risks of developing certain diseases, can be "medically or therapeutically meaningless" and could provide results that are "unclear, unreliable or inaccurate" (Moss, Scotsman, 10/12). In addition, the researchers note that some private, direct-to-consumer CT or MRI scans are falsely marketed as a form of a "health checkup" to individuals who do not have symptoms for any conditions. As a result, the readings might be difficult to interpret and suggest "abnormalities" that actually are [more...]

There was certainly no shortage of circumstantial evidence connecting Simpson to the murders. Nobel season '10: Chemistry

I've also seen that different large-scale DNA-sequencing approaches, primarily shotgun sequencing, are on the map in Swedish media which I think is really strange. Firstly because Fred Sanger, who developed shotgun sequencing, is 92 years old and a double Nobel laureate in chemistry already (1958 and 1980), and secondly because the field of large-scale sequencing still hasn't peaked by any means. Perhaps Leroy Hood (again) could be considered for the development of the first automated DNA sequencer? As part of writing this book, I anonymously had my own DNA sampled by the three companies that are doing direct-to-consumer marketing of DNA testing, because there is obviously a lot of interest in all that and I was interested, too. The laboratory side of this seems to work pretty well, because they all got the same genotype.
