Parasites are Everywhere!

DNA testing is now available to evaluate the contents of a stool sample, rather than relying on the imprecise method of a microscopic exam. And DNA testing has proven that it can literally find a needle in a haystack. Since DNA parasite analysis became available just over a year ago, it has shown to be an extremely valuable tool for helping to identify parasite infections seen in patients at the IBS Treatment Center. As a matter of practice we have always tested patients for parasites, but prior to the availability of DNA parasite testing, parasites were rarely diagnosed. DNA testing is [more...]

Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating, ultimately fatal neurological disorder which affects more than 5 million Americans. Neandertal DNA and Proteins

With the completion of the Neandertal genome by the team of Dr. Svante Paabo and a closer look at their proteins by Gregory Hannon’s team at CSHL, scientists reveal incredible similarities between Neandertals and humans. Neandertals, the extinct species of what are most likely our closest relatives, lived on earth at the same time as our human ancestors but died out about 30,000 years ago. With the sequence of their genome now complete, we can compare the DNA to humans and chimpanzees to learn more about what makes humans unique as a species. Addicted cancers

Most people know that smoking is a hard habit to kick because smokers become addicted to the nicotine and habit. Equally sad is the tendency of young adolescents to start smoking for social and psychological reasons. In a turn-around of sorts, it may be comforting to know that cancers can become addicted, too. Cancer cells have many different genetic changes, as well as changes in the expression of genes that are not due to mutations called epigenetic changes. Although cancer cells do have many differences from normal cells, they are still very similar to normal cells, making it very [more...]

In those susceptible to this form of muscular dystrophy, this DNA mutation stabilizes the product of the DUX4 gene and thus causes the gene to be more active. “This provides a new and unifying model for FSHD because it will focus future research on determining whether the DUX4 protein causes FSHD, as indicated by our consortium’s genetic analysis,” Tapscott said. It might be more real than not. This is an exciting breakthrough for telomerase is an enzyme that adds DNA sequence repeats to the 3′ end of DNA strands in the telomere regions, which are found at the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. DNA parentage testing when the alleged parent is deceased – DNA Tests

These types of samples will require mtDNA testing techniques, as opposed to standard STR DNA, but can be useful in determining parentage. Since, often times, success can not be guaranteed with samples of the deceased, it is recommended that one consult with a DNA testing laboratory or expert to be advised of the best option for your specific situation. In some cases, it may be helpful to rely on samples from the alleged parent’s family members, which can sometimes indirectly establish parentage. Un-accredited labs do not have to abide by any standards and, therefore, may not offer the best service and most accurate tests. One Hundred Years Later….Eye Color Genes “Visualized”

Understanding the inheritance of eye color has been a challenge for decades. Most parents try to make their best guess about their unborn child’s eye color, hoping for that warm brown or the more rare bright blue outcome. "Eye Colors in Man," from The Trait Book, ERO Bulletin No. 6, by Charles B. Davenport, 1912 (Archive Image #1913) Davenport and other eugenicists oversimplified eye-color inheritance early in the last century, and we have since come to discover that several genes determine eye color. Recently, a group in the Netherlands has taken our understanding a step further by using [more...]

So-called “designer babies” have generated fervent discussion in recent weeks, sparked by the latest online dating trend: a sperm and egg bank with the goal to make beautiful people. For some, genetic manipulation is a moral necessity, for others it is an ethical outrage. We are reminded of the eugenics movement. “Better Babies” contests, originally conceived to promote child welfare and physical development, were the first eugenics contests run at a state fairs (the first held in 1908). The initial goal of the Human Genome Project was to find, map and sequence all of the genes within the human genome.  Since the completion of the initial draft back in 2000, the White House predicted that this would lead to a new era of molecular medicine, bringing new ways to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure disease.  It has been amazing to see what we have learned since then, but even more interesting to think of where this could go in the future.  Hopefully soon we will be able to apply this on a more individual basis, with people being able to identify potential risk factors for [more...]
