NY Times talks "Baby Daddy" bill

The law that (Carnell) Smith helped to pass in Georgia, like a similar one in Ohio, sets no time limit on using DNA to challenge paternity. The premise is that a man shouldn’t be punished for entering a paternal relationship that he would have avoided had he known the truth. It is, Smith says, a correction to a double standard that allows mothers and caseworkers to use DNA to prove paternity but prohibits men from using that same evidence to escape its obligations. But child-welfare experts counter that a child shouldn’t be punished by losing the only father she has ever known — or the [more...]

Is it Possible? DNA Paternity Testing Before Childs BirthDNA ...

The method used to collect the sample for the DNA test is chorionic villus sampling or CVS, if the pregnancy is in the period 10-13 weeks after the baby was conceived. This procedure includes the doctor inserting a thin needle or a fine tube guided by ultrasound, into the womb through the uterus and cervix to obtain a sample of chorionic villi that composes the placenta, therefore home DNA testing is not possible. The DNA samples will be tested and analyzed. When the mother is between 14 to 24 weeks pregnant, the method used to collect the baby’s sample is called amniocentesis which is [more...]

Baby DNA test: Who is the father? Part II

A baby DNA test is one means of establishing with certainty who the daddy of the unborn child is. One can of course choose to wait till after the child is born although it is important to know that this is not necessary as a paternity test can be conclusively carried out while the mother is still pregnant. How is the Baby DNA testing done? There are two main methods through which the unborn baby’s DNA can be sampled. Amniocentesis: this is carried out anywhere between week 14 and week 20 of the pregnancy and is normally done as a routine procedure to locate abnormalities in the chromosomes. [more...]

grasping for objectivity in my subjective life: 29. And Prepared ...

So. Today is my last day of being 28 years old. Typically, I’m such a big fan of birthdays (particularly my own) and the personalized attention that comes with them, that I don’t mind at all the thought of becoming a year older. But there’s just something distasteful about the thought of 29. After all, 29 is the age that every woman OVER the age of 29 that is desperately trying to hold onto her youth claims to be. When I hear the age 29, I immediately picture a 45 year old woman in tight leopard print pants and a hot pink shirt with too much makeup on and hair dyed and curled in the [more...]

Paternity - How to Establish Paternity | Expert Guides | Yodle ...

Generally, after some fraught, high-pitched conversation, the host will challenge the so-called father to take a paternity test. Left with little choice, the man reluctantly agrees. More often than not, he is proven to be the father. A real-life version of this scenario is one I come along all too often in my family law practice. Paternity is often contested. But a father should never neglect his duties, which beyond those of fatherhood can often be financial and practical for the mother. Here are a few methods to prove someone is the father of a child. Marriage at time of birth – If you [more...]

Advantages Of DNA Paternity Test

DNA Paternity Test is trusted way of confirming a biological relationship of a supposed father to a child. In fact here are the two methods used to perform this type of test. 1. Court Admissible Test – Collection of samples is performed through a controlled chain-of-custody procedure  with a third party to act as a witness and verify the authenticity of the samples.  This is a cheat proof  system if a neutral and qualified third party witness is used. 2. At-Home DNA Paternity Test. DNA Testing kit is  usually sent at home and the person involved is responsible for collecting his own [more...]

Can you cheat at a Paternity Test? | DNA Test

Mothers can also want to cheat at a paternity test. Mothers who know that it is likely that the man being tested is NOT the biological father will try to contaminate the child’s swab with there own DNA, as they think this will provide a negative result without the laboratory noticing. Our laboratory will pick up this contamination, re-testing will be required. The truth more often than not does surface. Our process maybe easy, and yes there are clients who believe they can cheat the system. But it really is not that easy. Augusta Military Divorce Attorney - Who's the father?

That's because occasionally a child's DNA will have novel mutations that differ from both biological parents. In those cases, a lab would need a knowledgeable geneticist to help interpret the results and thus avoid a false negative. The problem with drugstore testing is that there's no proof that the DNA samples came from the people claimed to have sent them. Therefore, such results wouldn't hold up legally. The customers for DNA tests tend to be equally divided between men and women, said Kristine Ashcraft, a molecular biologist at Genelex Corp., a company that also offers such tests over [more...]

Paternity Blood Test | Diet and Health Tips & Products Reviews

Today, the most accurate tests (99.99%) to determine the paternity of a child are made through DNA. Collecting DNA sample is done two ways: Buccal swab (swabbing the inside of the cheek) and blood samples. Known as PCR (polymerase chain reaction), the procedure is used in comparing samples of the childís DNA with that of the alleged father. Since the childís DNA is a fairly equal combination of DNA of his parents, excluding the DNA of the mother gives us a genetic profile of the biological father. However, before science knew how to isolate DNA, blood samples were the standard in a variety [more...]

Mitochondrial DNA Genealogy

The mitochondrial DNA genealogy is the study of a person’s mother’s family line of maternal ancestors. This DNA is passed down from mother to each of her children exactly as she has it, with no mutations, except in the very rare instances. Because of the traditions in our society of the wife taking her husband’s last name, a surname genealogy trace of the female line of the family tree is more difficult. On the flip side, since this DNA strand is more stable than the Y DNA, more conclusive results can be determined for the testing of it. The mt-DNA is sometimes referred to as the Full [more...]
