DNA Is New Weapon In Fight Against Dogfighting

Working with the ASPCA, Wictum is compiling a database called the Canine Combined DNA Index System. So far, it includes about 400 samples taken from inside the cheeks of fighting dogs, including those seized in the Missouri raid. It's designed to help law enforcement go after not just the fight operators, but the breeders, as well. Rickey says that's where the money is. "For most of these fighters, it all comes down to creating a champion, and then to breed that champion," he says. Breeders can get as much as $20,000 for a puppy from a champion bloodline, according to Rickey. And genetic [more...]

Dog DNA Testing Told Meredith Vieira What She Did Not Have ...

Before she had her dog, Jasper, DNA tested live on the “Today Show”, Meredith Vieira did not realize that Jasper was not what she thought he was. Meredith had purchased Jasper from a pet store believing he was an Aussie-Poo, or Australian Shepherd, Poodle mix. SURPRISE! After the test, Meredith discovered that Jasper is actually a Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, and Borzoi mix! The early morning television host is not alone; more than 85 percent of mutt or mixed breed owners don’t know or cannot be sure which breeds are in their dogs’ backgrounds. Pet guardians no longer have to wonder or [more...]

The Crime Report » Archive » DNA Database For Dogs To Help ...

Scientists are hoping that a new DNA database for dogs will help track — and prosecute — people who breed dogs to fight, reports KQED radio. Advocates say there’s a risk that the DNA records could be used against the dogs, or against people who adopt them. The idea is to have a canine version of the FBI’s CODIS — a database of human DNA that is used to connect criminals to crime scenes. In this case, the DNA might help prove that breeders supplied dogs to a dogfighting ring. In a Missouri case, DNA samples from dogs proved that these weren’t just random pound dogs. They were [more...]

Dna Breed Identification

Has anyone used a canine DNA test …? Has anyone successfully used one of these DNA identification of career? Not to determine paternity, but to see what kind of mixed race that is. If so, what type it was and how much? I used the kit BioPet a couple of times. Both times it was on sale at amazon.com for $ 35.00. Probably not pay much more, given the limitations of these tests. If you try, keep in mind that these tests can not detect certain races (a list raised the manufacturers site.) If the result is a dog that turns out to be something that is not in its database of race, get skewed [more...]

Pit Bulls in Chicago – UPchicago.com

Breed-specific legislation, or BSL, is the route some municipalities have taken in an attempt to curb attacks by “vicious” dogs. This is based on appearance of the dog, as DNA testing of dogs, while available, is expensive, not to mention complicated when you start analyzing mutts. American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, and Rottweilers are among the most common targets of BSL. Breed bans are in effect in many cities, some mandating that owners of certain breeds carry more insurance or build higher fences, to an outright ban, as in Denver, [more...]

Rough Collie | Largest Pet Health and Medicine Information

Rough Collie (also known as the Long-Haired Collie) is a breed of dog developed originally for herding in Scotland. It is well known through the works of author Albert Payson Terhune, and latterly through the Lassie novel, movies, and television shows. There is also a smooth-coated variety; some breed organizations consider the smooth-coat and rough-coat dogs to be variations of the same breed. Three coat colors are recognized for Rough Collies: sable and white, where the “sable” ranges from pale tan to a mahogany; tricolour, which is primarily black edged in tan; blue [more...]

Should they be liable if that dog bites a third party and a DNA test was not done? These tests cost $70.00 and above. Should the cost be borne by the shelter or the adopter? Will steeper costs affect adoptions? What percentage of pit bull in such a genetic analysis is enough to violate a ban? Can a city with a ban or spay/neuter mandate of certain breeds force pet owners to test and share results? Can homeowner's insurance providers require tests? What's That Mutt: A big surprise in Nanai's family tree

Canine Heritage's Web site explains that "In the Mix" breeds are ones that "that have the least amount of influence on your pet's composition, however, they still appear, at a low and measurable amount, in your pet's DNA." And in Nanai's DNA: English Coonhound and, believe it or not, Bernese Mountain Dog. The hound would explain Nanai's tracking behavior and her baying howl when left alone, and the Bernese Mountain Dog would explain her herding instinct. As for her love of water, well, apparently that's just her own personal quirk! Nanai's DNA-test results certainly prove that a dog who [more...]
