An ELISA-based high throughput protein truncation test for ...

Here, we report the next generation HTS-PTT using triple-epitope-tagged proteins and demonstrate, for the first time, its efficacy on clinical genomic DNA samples for BRCA1/2 analysis. Methods: Segments of exons 11 of BRCA1/2 open reading frames were PCR amplified from either blood derived genomic DNA or cell line mRNA. PCR primers incorporate elements for cell-free transcription/translation and epitope tagging. Cell-free expressed nascent proteins are then antibody-captured onto the wells of a microtiter plate and the relative amount of truncated polypeptide measured using antibodies against [more...]

Do these genes make my bum look big? | Toowoomba Health | Fitness ...

A WOMAN's fashion fate is partly determined at birth by her "apple or pear" genes, research has shown. Scientists have identified 13 new gene regions containing DNA variations linked to body shape. Many have a much stronger effect in women than in men, deciding whether they are more likely to store fat around the middle or bottom of their bodies. Apple-shaped individuals with extra fat around their waists are known to have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. On the other hand, some experts believe a pear-shaped body with fat stored in the thighs and buttocks protects [more...]

(BLOG) - Lifestyle in Computers: Exonerating the innocent: using ...

As with normal fingerprints, governments around the world have built a database of DNA fingerprints since the late 1980s. DNA often is found on the crime scene in the form of bodily fluids, such as blood. Using these samples, DNA can be compared in a laboratory using gel electrophoresis, which uses a magnetic field to separate the strands of DNA. Unfortunately, especially in the early history of DNA fingerprinting, mistakes were often made. It is estimated that one tenth of a percent of DNA comparisons are incorrectly done. This may not seem like a lot, but considering that there are more [more...]

Test For Expecting Mothers May Reveal Inherited Diseases – digital ...

Using exceedingly exact digital oximeter testing equipment, both normal and mutant DNA sequences are reviewed in maternal blood. The blood count is then utilized to determine the amount of distorted genes inherited by the unborn child and to decide the likelihood of the baby developing a monogenic disorder. Lo, did note the accurateness of his technique depends on the amount of DNA from the fetus present in the maternal blood during testing. If identified at its earliest stage, physicians have a better chance of treating the monogenic disease and gaining the best results. For example, [more...]

HTB – Early infant diagnosis

She concluded that promising POC assays for EID today include: IQuum’s LIAT, SAMBA, CIGHT p24 and possibly CLONDIG’s viral load assay. comment This was an incredibly useful overview and it looks like we can be optimistic about having a POC test for EID in the next couple of years. Other presentations at the conference dealt with the challenges of access to EID. In the same session, Shaffiq Essajee noted that EID access has improved and in some countries more than 50% of exposed infants are tested. But infant testing is usually linked to PMTCT and if coverage is low, so is infant [more...]

The cancer holy grail: DNA test will allow doctors to create ...

The researchers at Johns Hopkins took six sets of cancerous and normal tissue from four bowel and two breast cancer patients and “sequenced” – or decoded – the complete set of DNA for each patient. By comparing DNA from healthy and cancerous tissue, the researchers could spot where large parts of genetic code had been altered. These changes occur only in cancer cells, making them ideal biomarkers for the disease. Once the researchers found areas where DNA had been rearranged, they looked for the same changes in DNA shed from tumours into the patients” blood. Using blood samples [more...]

HPV DNA Test for Cervical Cancer

According to Lab Tests Online, the HPV DNA test still requires a sample of cells from the cervix. It is NOT a blood test. I emphasize this point because most of the news I’ve seen either got it wrong or didn’t clarify the testing procedure. For most people, DNA tests still mean a blood test even though DNA can be extracted from other samples, such as the ubiquitous cheek swab. Currently, the HPV DNA test is used in combination with the traditional pap smear. However, recent studies have shown that HPV testing may be used alone and make it possible for women to prolong the time between [more...]

Article Snack » Where To Learn More About Proof Of Paternity

Using the coming of DNA testing these days, paternity can be established with almost 100% accuracy. Except for identical twins, your DNA is as distinctive as your fingerprint. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) denotes your genetic makeup like the color of your hair and eyes, skin color, height, and others. The youngster gets 50% of his DNA from his mum and also the other half derives from his dad. Comparing the child’s DNA with that in the biological mom will get rid of the genes inherited from her. What remains are the DNA of the father. A comparison of probes between the father, mother and [more...]

Using deep sequencing information from hair, mouth and blood samples, WCU’s research will attempt to reveal whether the forensic DNA typing field might benefit in making interpretational changes in some aspects of  DNA analysis.  Deep sequencing is a method to find minor variations within a DNA sequence that are present as a small percentage of the whole. “This research may have an impact on the number of interpretations that are inconclusive,” Wilson said. “In other words, it may result in more definitive conclusions, although this remains to be seen.” The research also might [more...]

When a Raleigh newspaper reported this past summer that analysts in the crime lab of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation routinely withheld test results favorable to the defendant, the scientific community and defense attorneys urged the state to make the crime lab independent of the state's law enforcement agency. This week, the newspaper reported that it was not only the practice for analysts to withhold possibly exculpatory evidence, it was also the policy.
