Study Says Some Lizards Form Social Groups, Families - The Daily ...

The researchers also collected samples from the lizards' tails to conduct paternity testing using their DNA. Juvenile lizards were found still living with parent lizards up to three years after birth, according to the study. "What is particularly exciting is that the same sorts of patterns are observed in social mammals and birds," said Ammon Corl, who co-authored the study when he was a former graduate student at UC Santa Cruz, in an e-mail. Because desert night lizards offer relatively little parental care after childbirth, it is not yet clear why offspring are staying with the parents for [more...]

TTC VIDEO – Major Transitions in Evolution

New technologies, such as DNA analysis, together with the latest fossil discoveries, make this a fast-changing subject that has grown far more detailed and complete than the presentation you may have learned in school. Among the scientific and popular misconceptions that have been overturned are these: * Neandertals: Recently sequenced DNA from Neandertals suggests that they were not an isolated throwback but contributed some genes to the modern human lineage. Genetic and other clues show that behaviorally Neandertals were very human-like. * Ardipithecus: The 2009 discovery of a relatively [more...]

NTSB: Bird strike may have preceded fatal helicopter crash - CNN

Though a bird specialist's initial visual examination found no evidence of a bird strike, DNA testing of a swab taken from the windscreen on the pilot's side of the Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopter found microscopic remains of a hawk, the NTSB said. "The swab was taken from an area of the windscreen that exhibited concentric ring fractures," the NTSB said in a written statement. "Similar concentric rings were visible in the gel coat of the fuselage area just above the windscreen."Last week, in a second examination of the wreckage, small feather parts were also found "under a right-side windscreen [more...]

The Eastern Echo

The factors that can be contributed to human health risks are sediment, bird droppings, urban runoff and industrial outfalls. It is also important to understand the movement and transportation of these substances to ensure they will not affect the water. “Always, one foot in microbiology, one foot in engineering and one foot in public health.” Rose said, about the three fields that are combined in order to test the waters. “Much of the work has to be discovered within the field and a lot of times the laboratory will end up in someone’s backyard adding the element of community [more...]
