Reading DNA test results | Iranian.com

I've been getting my DNA test results in bits and pieces. Remember I did the test? Companies like Family Tree DNA claim they can dig up your ancestral background. Well, so far I haven't learned much. I mean there's a lot of information but I'm not sure how relevant it is. For one thing, the test show almost no genetic links in Iran. I'm three-quarters Iranian (Iranian father, half-Iranian half-American mother). So how is that possible? The only explanation is that the genetic pool available to the testers does not include many Iranians to compare their DNA to mine. The tests show I have "full [more...]

Out of Africa? Americans search for ancestry - CNN

At African Ancestry, scientists take a DNA sample with swabs from a client's cheek, sequence it, and then compare those results with those in their database, Paige explained. They can trace over 21,000 indigenous African tribal lineages representing around 30 African countries and 135 ethnic groups. The costs for DNA analysis varies widely -- from around $150 to thousands of dollars -- depending on the type of search and how deep someone digs.Because of the variables involved to conduct an ancestral search, researchers say some homework is required.Scientists warn that although a DNA search can [more...]

Can DNA Tests Reveal Nationality? » Scienceline

The Borders Agency is primarily using two types of DNA tests: mitochondrial DNA tests, which examine the genetic information stored in a cellular structure called a mitochondrion, and what are called Y-line tests, which look at markers on the Y-chromosome passed from father to son. These tests have been widely used to examine people’s ancestral heritage. Since certain genetic variations are typical in certain areas, geneticists can use an individual’s DNA to estimate where their ancestors came from. But when this technique is used to look at someone’s nationality rather than the origin [more...]

Chimp vs Human DNA- The “Ninety-Eight Percent” Myth

As we enter the month of August, it’s time once again for students to head back to school.  That being the case, there’s a good chance that in science classes all across the country, as teachers cover the topic of evolution, sooner or later they will make mention of the “98 percent similarity” between human DNA and chimpanzee DNA, thus implying common ancestry.  Over the past several years, this idea of 98 percent similarity has been repeated so many times that it is now widely accepted by most people as a “scientific fact.”  But is that really the case? To begin with, it’s [more...]

Dienekes' Anthropology Blog: Playing with ADMIXTURE

My main goal was to analyze the data in the recent Xing et al. (2010) paper. It's unfortunate that many recent papers do not have their data online, or they hide them behind various institutional controls, but the data in that paper (a total of 40 populations typed for a quarter million markers) is available online. High levels of mitochondrial DNA divergence within short - CSIRO ...

Nine mtDNA control region haplotypes were identified within the seven colonies. There were unusually high levels of sequence divergence (up to 6.9%) within colonies at Litchfield NP. This divergence suggests that multiple taxa may exist within what is currently recognised as P. brachyotis. Alternatively, if current taxonomy is correct, the high levels of divergence raise the possibility of ancestral isolation and divergence of populations in allopatry with subsequent admixture at a secondary contact zone. The possibility that these unusually divergent haplotypes result from introgressive [more...]
