The Genographic Project: DNA Testing Hits Home | Brain Pickings

Here comes the cool part: You can order a kit and test your own DNA. At home. Then submit the results to the National Geographic database for analysis, not only finding out your own geneticgenetic journey but also becoming a little flag on the great big map of human geneaology. So far, they’ve received results from nearly 300,000 people and raised over $8 million. The whole thing is, of course, a non-profit and any money they raise, after covering the cost of the kit and the data processing, gets funnelled back into the project, mostly into The Legacy Fund — a grant-giving charity that [more...]

Cool-O-Rama » Personality Test For Gamers

(Post by nerdbastards contributor Nick Bungay- Twitter @NickBungay) We’ve all taken a test at one point or another: in school, in relationships (the scary ones), and in a video game, but, have you tested what kind of gamer you are? Similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, devised based on theories by Carl Jung and created by International Hobo, the test determines what kind of gamer you really are. Based on how the individual takes on challanges within a gaming enviroment, and can result in you seeing just why you play the games you do. The test may seem like it’s a little annoying to [more...]

Cooling Inflammation: Healthcare: DNA Testing vs. Diet and Exercise

Inflammation is the foundation for cancer and degenerative/autoimmune diseases. Small changes in diet and exercise, e.g. omega-3 oils, vitamin D, low starch, plant antioxidants, and maintaining muscle mass, can dramatically alter predisposition to disease and aging, and minimize the negative impact of genetic risks. Based on my experience in biological research, I am trying to explain how the anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle combat [more...]

Popular Mechanics Posts 2010 BREAKTHROUGH Awards — The Gadgeteer

While working at the National Institutes of Health in the early 1990s, Venter developed a way to rapidly discover genes by exploiting snippets of DNA called expressed sequence tags. In 1992, he founded The Institute for Genomic Research, and, three years later, he and a team decoded the first genome of a free-living organism. That led to Venter’s best-known breakthrough, mapping the human genome. Last May, he achieved a defining moment in the history of biology when he inserted digitally created DNA into a living bacterium, forming the first synthetic life. His ultimate goal is to design [more...]

Hey If you haven’t heard of LUSH before, they make fresh handmade cosmetics such as soaps, bath bombs, bubble bars, solid shampoos, and more. What’s cool about LUSH is they use organic ingredients, a lot of the products are vegan, and they don’t test on animals. It sure is expensive, but I’m willing to give it all a shot! If you live around DC, then you may know there’s a LUSH in the Tysons Corner Center Mall, but did you know there’s one in the Tysons Galleria Mall inside the Macy’s? It’s big and roomy too! Buddy Gets a DNA Test

So, when I saw we had the BioPet Vet Lab DNA Breed Identification Kit For Dogs on our site, I ordered it right away. This was my chance to tell the world the particulars of Buddy’s ancestry. Everyone who knows Buddy is fairly certain he’s part Rottweiler, but what else…Labrador retriever? Perhaps some mastiff? Maybe a little boxer?  What could account for his slightly longer coat and fluffy tail? His dramatic coloring? His agility? When the kit came, I was delighted. I read through all the papers and saw that in the 63 breeds that are in their database, Rottweiler, Labrador retriever, [more...]

Nobel season '10: Chemistry

I've also seen that different large-scale DNA-sequencing approaches, primarily shotgun sequencing, are on the map in Swedish media which I think is really strange. Firstly because Fred Sanger, who developed shotgun sequencing, is 92 years old and a double Nobel laureate in chemistry already (1958 and 1980), and secondly because the field of large-scale sequencing still hasn't peaked by any means. Perhaps Leroy Hood (again) could be considered for the development of the first automated DNA sequencer? Anyway, the technologies that are advancing the field have been developed by private companies [more...]

HTC is clearly setting its stall out with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7, as it brought out five handsets for the platform. Windows Phone 7 phones: all the handsets The HTC HD7 is by far the biggest of them, with a Desire HD- and HD2-matching 4.3-inch screen atop the near-identical hardware specs of its other WP7 brethren. Solving the Traveling Salesman Problem with Genetic Algorithms and ...

Mutation rate: You cannot simply change EVERYthing on each generation. You must maintain some of the core DNA in order to improve. Otherwise the solution is too random and does not converge. Similarly, too little mutation and the solution converges too slowly. Number of Breeders – you would think breeding from the single-best solution at any given point would be ideal. Surprisingly the system did better when a higher number, say 10% of the population is used to breed from. Too many and again you don’t converge. Too few and the system can be boxed into a dead-end solution ala the Hill [more...]

It means that he has a specific set of DNA markers. Those markers show that his maternal ancestors were part of that crazy group of people that left Africa approximately 50 000 years ago, and arrived in South America some 30 000 years later. It also means that my maternal ancestors on my fathers side were Native Americans. And this, I can't deny, I find very fascinating and quite cool. DNA Testing During Pregnancy

The cool thing is that DNA testing during pregnancy can make such determinations during pregnancy. This can be done by blood or saliva tests after the child is born, but before the child is born, the procedure is a little more complicated. A paternity during pregnancy must be done by a process called an amniocentesis. What is Amniocentesis? With an amniocentesis, the paternity test before birth is done on the amniotic fluid. This can take place between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. With the guidance of an ultrasound, the physician will insert a needle into the uterus and into the amniotic [more...]
