Newspaper Rock: "Actual Indian" defined

In Jocks Aren't Good Role Models, a correspondent questioned my use of the term “actual Indian.” She thought I was referring mainly to “full-blooded” Indians. No, I wasn’t—not even close. In this blog I’m usually inclusive about whom I label an Indian. The short version of who’s an “actual Indian” is “anyone whom Indians accept as an Indian.” More precisely, when Indians talk about who’s an Indian, here’s what I think they’re talking about—and therefore what I’m talking about. I’d say anyone who meets one or more of these criteria qualifies as an Indian. 1) [more...]

DNA test determines that the 13-Year-old isn't the father! // News ...

Thank God for DNA tests….. Alfie Patten, now 13, took the test after six other teenagers came forward to claim they had also slept with Chantelle Steadman, the 15-year-old who gave birth to baby Maisie Roxanne last month. “I didn’t know about DNA tests before but mum explained it’s when they do a swab in your mouth and it tells if you’re the dad,” he was quoted as saying before undergoing the test. “So if I have it, they can all shut up.” “It had not even crossed Alfie’s mind whether Chantelle had not been faithful to him,” his mother Nicole said. Since the birth, Alfie [more...]

Good Grades and Good Test Scores . . . Isn't that Enough for ...

Whereas it is true that most college admissions committees (ADCOMs) view secondary school (high school) academic performance and standardized test scores (PSAT, SAT, ACT) as the two most important attributes in a college application profile, there has been a growing emphasis on other parts of the application. College counselors will tell you, gone are the days where grades and tests are all that matter to a colleges admission officers. With more and more information available, students know which schools they can be competitive at. Be it Yale or the University of Alabama, the students [more...]

Government moves to oversee at-home genetic tests - Chicago ...

The FDA first signaled a possible shift in direction after another firm, Pathway Genomics, last month moved to sell genetic test kits through Walgreens drugstores. The plan was quickly shelved, but a high-profile congressional committee launched its own investigation. The tests prompting attention are not the highly specialized DNA scans ordered by physicians. Instead, these consumer-oriented offerings evaluate an individual's risk of developing various illnesses or responding variably to different medications, based on test findings. That is problematic because most of the genetic [more...]

Technology Review: Blogs: TR Editors' blog: Walgreens Halts Plans ...

"In light of the FDA contacting Pathway Genomics about its genetic test kit and anticipated ongoing discussions between the two parties, we've elected not to move forward with offering the Pathway product to our customers until we have further clarity on this matter," said Walgreens spokesman Jim Cohn, the Washington Post reported. According to the newspaper, Pathway said in a statement late Wednesday, "We respect and understand Walgreens's decision and we are communicating with the FDA about the Pathway Genomics Insight collection kit. Pathway works very diligently to ensure that our [more...]

Test Your DNA as Part of National Geographic and IBM's Unique Genographic Project When it comes to our roots, most of us think we know where our early ancestors came from – the continent if not the country. Most people have clear ideas on their nationality and they see it as a defining part of themselves and their identity. The Genographic Project, launched by National Geographic, IBM and scientist Dr Spencer Wells, seeks to challenge what we think we know about our very distant past - and our very notions of who we are. Studies of DNA have suggested that all humans today are descended from [more...]

What's happenin' with the Fraziers?: The story of Finn

A nurse came in at 8 am and told me that they were still going to do an ultrasound to check Finn's status. They wheeled me down to where the ultrasound room was and got me ready. The ultrasound technician decided that it would be a good idea to push the ultrasound wand onto my belly when I was having a contraction even when I told him not to, stupid man! I kept trying to ask him questions about what was going on and how much he weighed. He told me that he weighed around 4 lbs. My stomach dropped at that point. He then asked me if they had given me steroids (apparently to help his lungs [more...]

DNA Dog Testing: More Questions than Answers

Should they be liable if that dog bites a third party and a DNA test was not done? These tests cost $70.00 and above. Should the cost be borne by the shelter or the adopter? Can a city with a ban or spay/neuter mandate of certain breeds force pet owners to test and share results? Can homeowner's insurance providers require tests? Globalbelai7: Alternative perspective on Vaccine Science? or ...

This is precisely the kind of pseudoscientific gobbledygook you might hear from some mad Russian scientist who claims to have "magic water" but you can't test the magic water because the mere presence of measurement instruments nullifies the magical properties of the water. Similarly, vaccine pushers often insist it's unethical to test whether their vaccines really work. You just have to "take it on faith" that vaccines are universally good for everybody. Yep, I used the word "faith." That is essentially what the so-called scientific community is invoking here with the vaccine issue: Just [more...]

"After years of trying to simplify personalization, I finally got it down to two words: Personal = Smarter. The more you customize, the smarter you get. The smarter you get, the more competitive you become. It really is that simple. Doing it, of course, takes a lot of work." According to Bruce's definition, personalization is using technology to accommodate the differences between people. Done right, it's a win/win strategy for providing a better outcome for both the service provider and the individuals involved. For example, if a doctor gives a patient a test to [more...]

How Jets' Cromartie fathered nine kids with eight women over six ...

Cromartie acknowledged paternity only after a DNA test confirmed it, Pierre said. Gardner offered to pay for an abortion, saying, "We just had one done for him" with another girl. Pierre refused. He didn't visit Pierre and his first child in the hospital, but Gardner came with Cromartie's "sister," a woman who was actually his girlfriend. Pierre, then 18, bought baby supplies herself, she said. Cromartie agreed to contribute $50 a week, records show. While Pierre worked two jobs, Gardner watched the baby. "Everyone was more concerned about his football career. His mom did everything for [more...]

Because testing for pharmaceuticals is expensive—about $800 per test— they sampled for pharmaceuticals at only three sites. These included the Angosturo Diversion Dam north of Albuquerque, where the river crosses beneath Interstate-25, and near the National Hispanic Cultural Center. “We found pharmaceuticals at all three sites, during all five sampling events,” said Jensen, who pointed out that these ranged from DEET and the active ingredient in sunscreen to anti-seizure medication, Tylenol and caffeine.  The levels they noted, he said, were comparable to those found during a US [more...]

Slots: Definition of Average Hit Frequency? - OpenVegas.com

The "Hit Rate Percentage" is a number put out by the slot manufacturer and what it means is the frequency, over the long term, that the machine will put out ANY pay that returns credits to the player. So if you were betting 20 credits and you "won" 2 credits that would count as a hit even though you technically lost 18 credits. How they get this number is when a game is ready for market the slot maker needs to show how the game will work/play over the long term as part of its licensing process. To simulate this "in the long run..." the machine plays itself for what is usually some [more...]

Definition of a feature complete build - Software Testing Club ...

Some developers do unit test their code quite thoroughly and wouldn’t give you a build unless they were absolutely sure that you weren’t going to find anything wrong with it. Others will give you a build because they’ve put all the necessary code in the software for it to work, and, as far as they can tell, it should work. What would you expect from a feature complete build? Not a final build, but a feature complete build. To me, a feature complete build should be treated exactly the same by the developer as a final build but should come with an expectation that, yes, there maybe one [more...]

The only way to be recognized as a true science is to allow the hypothesis to be questioned, and rejected if unsupported by observation and testing. I don't think you want your god subjected to true scientific scrutiny. ... As another commenter said, subject it to peer review and allow others to test the theory. Do the creationists actually care to do that? Or do they just want to make assertions without any rational scrutiny? Seems like the latter. [more...]
