The Returning Casualty Blog » We thank our partners in DNA analysis
Many professionals have helped TRC in its mission, and the DNA analysts have been among the most supportive. Some of the best in the nation have come forth to assist. TRC’s first door opened at Family Tree DNA, a Houston based service that uses state of the art DNA technology to discover the ancestry of its clients (See the website www.familytreedna.com for interesting information about DNA technology, including an interview with BBC.). The company’s President and CEO, Bennett Greenspan, promptly replied to TRC’s request for assistance. Mr. Greenspan and TRC’s General Counsel, Wesley [more...]

ERV's latest blog on the FDA paper. One step too far?.
PNAS paper, using standard PCR to ID 'positives' and 'negatives', with insane numbers of bands as a result of non-specific primer binding. Insane numbers. As if this is 1990 and we dont know what 'Real Time PCR' and 'Taqman Probes' are. Im going to ignore that and grant the premise they really have IDed viral sequences. And they arent XMRV. They dont cluster anywhere near XMRV on a phylogenetic tree. Theyre something else entirely. Okay, well, logically it could be contamination from mouse DNA. So they checked for that... by looking for mouse mitochondrial DNA. *blink* I understand [more...]

Thank you. Well, it is such a pleasure to be here again at SAIS, and I want to thank Dean Einhorn for that very warm and thoughtful introduction. But this is such an exceptional educational institution, and I had no idea we had 300 of your alumni, but I see in action every day the results of the work, the research, the study, and preparation that goes on here at SAIS. We are the very proud employer of many SAIS alumni, and I hope that there are more of you who are going to be joining our ranks in the years to come. In addition to the contributions that Johns Hopkins has made in the fields of [more...]

“It is all my fault!” ~ President Barack Hussein Obama. Not!
It simply is not part of his DNA. He has never taken the fall throughout his entire life and now throughout his presidency. However, he is an expert at pointing the finger at others and throwing people under the bus. His most famous target, “It’s all George Bush’s fault.” So goes the presidency of Barack Hussein Obama. Discovering Obama’s Hidden Agenda It is simply amazing how much damage one man can do to our great country in such a short time period of 21 months. We hear nothing but disinformation, falsehoods, inaccuracies, twisted facts, smoke-and-mirrors, creative accounting, [more...]

Cross-posted with the Huffington Post At the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative held last week in New York City, I interviewed Gabriele Zedlmayer, Vice President for Global Social Innovation at Hewlett-Packard, on HP’s social impact portfolio, philosophy, and vision for the years to come. What brings you to the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative? It is a fantastic forum to meet with a lot of our partners. Michael J. Fox Foundation Launches Parkinson's Progression Markers ...
Fox Foundation has launched the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) (www.michaeljfox.org/PPMI), the first-ever large-scale clinical study exclusively focused on identifying and validating Parkinson's disease biomarkers. A biomarker is required to efficiently test potentially life-transforming new drugs that could slow or stop the progression of Parkinson's disease - something no PD treatment on today's market can do. A biomarker of Parkinson's has not yet been found. "Currently, Parkinson's patients have access only to treatments that temporarily alleviate symptoms. If a [more...]

Italy - Crisis of “Berlusconism” with a left that's out of the game
A pro-European, pro-austerity and pro-employer stance which is now included in its DNA and allows us to understand why, despite the difficulties of Berlusconi, this party does not find a voice and has no propulsive role in the country. To the inability of the "democratic” opposition we must add the complicity with the employer’s offensive of a large part of the trade union movement. Fiat is trying to wriggle out of national collective agreements to disorient the workers’ movement, leaving employers with their hands untied by reducing rights at work to the level of before 1968-1969. It [more...]

This year, volunteers have taken DNA swabs of the inside of their mouths to trace where their ancestors come from. The tests are provided by National Genographic, and the tests will be discussed at Middfest this weekend. Adriane Scherrer, the executive director of the We Can Business Incubator, discovered “we’re all pretty much from Botsawna,” which is this year’s featured country. “My map says I originally came from Botswana.” Scherrer initially took the test for her own benefit, because she was researching biological family members she only recently discovered. She thought [more...]

Combined efforts using DNA help solve 1988 Jacksonville mystery ...
The federal program began in 2004 under President George W. Bush’s DNA Initiative, which was created in part to help solve crimes and missing persons cases. The program costs about $200 million annually. Florida police agencies are required under a 2009 state law to attempt to collect two DNA samples from the families of anyone missing for more than 90 days and submit them to the database. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office last year collected samples in 43 cases as far back as 1972. Two identities have been made, including Johnson’s, whose sister’s DNA was used for the match. Two [more...]
