Do Not Overdo The Antibiotics

The quest for finding new antibiotics is still in place, sending lots of scientists out grubbing around in the dirt and performing highly technical DNA analyses on likely-looking bits of mud or mould. This is because bacteria have a tendency to develop a resistance to a certain antibiotic, which means that the doctor has to dish out a different antibiotic... but then the bacteria become resistant to that next antibiotic, and so forth. Are bacteria getting stronger and stronger via the process of antibiotic-stimulated natural selection? Is survival of the fittest working to breed new [more...]

Nice Little Gem For New Systems Or Test Machines - We Got Served ...

I thought I posted this before, but can't find it, so please excuse any duplication... I have found a nice little device that could be useful when testing different OS's or just helping to save a bay, or make it easier to swap out a drive. The SYBA SY-MRA25018 Mobile Rack for 2.5" SATA HDD fits into a rear slot, that would normally be used by the motherboard. Many of us are using Micro ATX or even Mini ITX motherboards in regular case, so we have several rear slots that go unused. Here's a way to use one of those slots instead of taking up a prized bay. I've been using this while testing [more...]

Its been too long!

but the dye during the test sorta pooled by at the ends of the tubes (doctor thought this was odd). He said it could be because I have scar tissue from possible endometriosis or my ovaries are enlarged and were pushing on the tubes. ... Surgery doesn't scare me, I've had a few and this one is like my others where its outpatient, so I can be in my own bed to recover, (and make my husband wait on me hand and foot....opps...did I say that out loud?). Reading DNA test results | Iranian.com

I've been getting my DNA test results in bits and pieces. Remember I did the test? Companies like Family Tree DNA claim they can dig up your ancestral background. Well, so far I haven't learned much. I mean there's a lot of information but I'm not sure how relevant it is. For one thing, the test show almost no genetic links in Iran. I'm three-quarters Iranian (Iranian father, half-Iranian half-American mother). So how is that possible? The only explanation is that the genetic pool available to the testers does not include many Iranians to compare their DNA to mine. The tests show I have "full [more...]

Expressing, purifying and characterizing proteins : PSI-Nature ...

Generally, the use of affinity tags to drive protein purification is widespread within PSI centers. Many tags can be used, but most groups use an N-terminal hexahistidine tag, partly because evidence suggests that hexahistidine tags do not normally have much effect on the N-terminal structure 4 and partly because histidine tags are small compared with other tags and less likely to affect solubility. An alternative for integral membrane proteins is to add a specific membrane-integrating fusion sequence for translation of integral membrane construct (Mistic); such fusions are proving useful for [more...]

Language Delays Found in Siblings of Children with ...

One striking finding was that among siblings, 20 percent had received a diagnosis of language delay or speech problems early in life. And half of them had particular qualities of speech that are autistic in nature. So the investigators believe that what is aggregating in these families is more than just the full syndrome of autism. In about 11 percent of families, more than one sibling has autism, and in many others, these subtle, quantitative signs and symptoms indicate many undiagnosed children are affected as well. That's important, Constantino says, because in studies involving DNA [more...]

Test Your DNA as Part of National Geographic and IBM's Unique ...

Test Your DNA as Part of National Geographic and IBM's Unique Genographic Project When it comes to our roots, most of us think we know where our early ancestors came from – the continent if not the country. Most people have clear ideas on their nationality and they see it as a defining part of themselves and their identity. The Genographic Project, launched by National Geographic, IBM and scientist Dr Spencer Wells, seeks to challenge what we think we know about our very distant past - and our very notions of who we are. Studies of DNA have suggested that all humans today are descended from [more...]

Celebrity Chef Sued Over Tips At NY Eatery - Money News Story ...

NEW YORK -- Celebrity chef Mario Batali and his business partners at the highly rated Manhattan restaurant Del Posto are being sued by 27 workers who said they weren't paid a legal wage. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday. It also said staff who worked banquets weren't getting their proper share of a 23 percent service charge billed to patrons that they probably assumed was a gratuity.
