Science is a new tool to get pet owners to clean up their act ...

PooPrints™ is a dog DNA identification program from BioPet Vet Lab built on a solid scientific foundation, providing communities with a means to enforce community regulations for pet waste clean-up. Dog waste is more than an aesthetic issue. Yes, the stuff is underfoot quite a bit. In the United States alone, the nation’s 73 million dogs generate approximately 6.3 billion pounds of waste annually. Approximately 40%, or 2.5 billion pounds, is never picked up by owners. Indeed, dog feces is a bacterial breeding ground of diseases that are especially dangerous to children and others with [more...]

Three kinds of page test visuals, and the best ways to use them ...

Three Kind of Page Test Visuals and How to Use Them by Web Performance Today #4 Josh Bixby on 10.12.10 at 10:27 am That’s a good question, Jonathan. I used to test with IE8, then made the switch to IE7 after some consideration of the fact that it’s still the third most popular browser version in the world, and 15% market share is still pretty significant. Put it this way: if you owned a bricks and mortar shop, would you be happy knowing that 3 out of 20 prospective customers had a hard time opening your door? It made sense to me to identify IE7 as a reasonable baseline for [more...]

Editorial: Test all DNA in Skinner case | Explore The Law

Rape victims involved in 20 Dallas County DNA exoneration cases know that. At one point, they thought they could go on with their lives knowing justice had been done, but it really hadn't been. Opponents of Texas' 2001 law providing access to DNA said the courts already had what they needed to deal with potential cases of miscarriage of justices, a position that looks silly today. It's possible that Skinner is as guilty as the West Texas sky is blue. Texas courts say they're sure of it. But they don't have all the facts, and there's no excuse not to have them. While working at the National Institutes of Health in the early 1990s, Venter developed a way to rapidly discover genes by exploiting snippets of DNA called expressed sequence tags. In 1992, he founded The Institute for Genomic Research, and, three years later, he and a team decoded the first genome of a free-living organism. That led to Venter’s best-known breakthrough, mapping the human genome. Last May, he achieved a defining moment in the history of biology when he inserted digitally created DNA into a living bacterium, forming the first synthetic life. The presentation began by showing a clip from the documentary “The Human Family Tree – A Migratory History of the Human Race,” which is about the Genographic project by National Geographic. The five-year project gathered DNA from people all over the world and managed to trace the geographical origin of human genes back thousands of years to Africa. It was only about 60,000 years ago that humans began to migrate to other continents, only 2,000 generations, or a blink of the biological eye. Hutchinson picked up the topic of the biology of race from there. He talked about how the study of [more...]

Why Do Liberals Hate Columbus Day? | Death and Taxes

There is a degree of truth to this assertion since Columbus did bring hundreds of Taino’s back to Seville in 1495, and African slaves were soon brought to Columbus’ colony to work the gold mines.  But, the truth is that Columbus no more introduced slavery to the Atlantic nations than Wall Street pioneered the concept of croney capitalism (speaking of which, yes, some banks are open on columbus day). Lagos, Portugal was the location of the first African slave market, opening its doors for business in 1444 when Christopher was a lad of six years old.  It should also be noted that [more...]

New technologies, such as DNA analysis, together with the latest fossil discoveries, make this a fast-changing subject that has grown far more detailed and complete than the presentation you may have learned in school. Among the scientific and popular misconceptions that have been overturned are these: * Neandertals: Recently sequenced DNA from Neandertals suggests that they were not an isolated throwback but contributed some genes to the modern human lineage. Genetic and other clues show that behaviorally Neandertals were very human-like. * Ardipithecus: The 2009 discovery of a relatively [more...]

How familial DNA can help crime victims

Using a familial DNA search, the crime lab compared the DNA left at the crime scenes with DNA samples in California's database of 1.3 million felons to search for near matches indicating possible relatives. The familial DNA search turned up 200 partial matches. Researchers then compared the Y chromosome (which is passed from father to son) found at the crime scene to the 200 partial matches. Only one result turned up: Franklin Jr.'s son, who had been convicted of a felony weapons charge. The police subsequently surveilled Franklin Jr. and directly connected him to the serial killings using [more...]
