Addicted cancers

Most people know that smoking is a hard habit to kick because smokers become addicted to the nicotine and habit. Equally sad is the tendency of young adolescents to start smoking for social and psychological reasons. In a turn-around of sorts, it may be comforting to know that cancers can become addicted, too. Cancer cells have many different genetic changes, as well as changes in the expression of genes that are not due to mutations called epigenetic changes. Although cancer cells do have many differences from normal cells, they are still very similar to normal cells, making it very [more...]

Could taking a nutritional supplement keep you young?

It might be more real than not. Scientists working at the biotech giant Geron Corporation have isolated a molecule, TA-65, which has the ability to increase telomerase activity (It is important to note that his find has not been evaluated in published peer reviewed studies as of yet). This is an exciting breakthrough for telomerase is an enzyme that adds DNA sequence repeats to the 3′ end of DNA strands in the telomere regions, which are found at the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. The telomeres contain condensed DNA material, giving stability to the chromosomes. These telomere DNA [more...]

Genes to Cognition at the Dolan DNA Learning Ctr

This post is meant to inform those unable to attend the Dolan DNA Learning Center workshop at the Stowers Institute on Genes to Cognition.  This is a site that you will want to delve into when you have a bit of time on your hands.  Well, that is if you are interested in learning and teaching about the connect between genes, cognitive behaviors, and their related brain disorders.  The student-friendly essential question that this site helps students and teachers to explore is, “What good is a brain?”  In all honesty, the site reminds me of Thomas Huxley’s book The Crayfish [more...]

One Hundred Years Later….Eye Color Genes “Visualized”

Understanding the inheritance of eye color has been a challenge for decades. Most parents try to make their best guess about their unborn child’s eye color, hoping for that warm brown or the more rare bright blue outcome. "Eye Colors in Man," from The Trait Book, ERO Bulletin No. 6, by Charles B. Davenport, 1912 (Archive Image #1913) Davenport and other eugenicists oversimplified eye-color inheritance early in the last century, and we have since come to discover that several genes determine eye color. Recently, a group in the Netherlands has taken our understanding a step further by using [more...]

PCR Rap | sciencerapper

An ingenious technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR, in the labaratory vernacular) uses a Polymerase to selectively an cheaply amplify certain sequences of DNA from very small amounts of starting materials.  The invention of PCR piggy-backe don many existing technologies, and we have used PCR to learn many, many things about biology. The following rap about the Polymerase Chain Reaction that highlights a few things: the beautiful way in which DNA is copied (using enzymes called Polymerases) the great insight of Kary Mullis to create a useful tool that could copy DNA in monumental, [more...]

Designer Babies and Fitter Families

So-called “designer babies” have generated fervent discussion in recent weeks, sparked by the latest online dating trend: a sperm and egg bank with the goal to make beautiful people. For some, genetic manipulation is a moral necessity, for others it is an ethical outrage. We are reminded of the eugenics movement. “Better Babies” contests, originally conceived to promote child welfare and physical development, were the first eugenics contests run at a state fairs (the first held in 1908). By 1920, “Fitter Families” contests were also held at state fairs, where human “stock” [more...]

Inside Cancer from the Dolan DNA Learning Ctr

This post is meant to inform those unable to attend the Dolan DNA Learning Center workshop Inside Cancer at the Stowers Institute today, which unfortunately I can now count myself among since I woke up under the weather the morning of the workshop and didn’t attend.  So, if there is anything that needs to be added to this post, those in attendance feel free to make extensive comments. Through brief communications with Larry Hare, I learned that besides learning about the Inside Cancer website, they were introduced to the Inside Cancer Teacher Center, where, after registration and [more...]

Human Genome Project

The initial goal of the Human Genome Project was to find, map and sequence all of the genes within the human genome.  Since the completion of the initial draft back in 2000, the White House predicted that this would lead to a new era of molecular medicine, bringing new ways to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure disease.  It has been amazing to see what we have learned since then, but even more interesting to think of where this could go in the future.  Hopefully soon we will be able to apply this on a more individual basis, with people being able to identify potential risk factors for [more...]

Cold Spring Harbor

Cold Spring Harbor is also home to the Dolan DNA Learning Center, the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium so there are some big lessons to be learned in this tiny little town! But, if you're too cool for school, you may choose to hike, dine or shop instead. You can take a hike in Cold Spring Harbor State Park. The entrance, with its steep, hilly steps, is reminiscent of the Dipsea Trail in Mill Valley, California. Home to great horned owls, red-tailed hawks and other interesting birds, this park is a nice place for birders. The park is [more...]

HIV Vaccine?

We are in the midst of a media explosion surrounding the possibility of a vaccine for HIV. For years this has seemed a hopeless situation, so a great deal of effort and money has been spent on the campaign to educate people about transmission and prevent infection. Unfortunately, according to recent reports (http://www.mg.co.za/article/2010-07-12-hiv-vaccine-the-only-real-answer), the number of new infections is still an alarming 7400 per day!  In addition, less than half of the 9.5 million people in low-middle income households infected with HIV have access to anti viral [more...]

New approach to Alzheimer's diagnosis

Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating, ultimately fatal neurological disorder which affects more than 5 million Americans. The disease has no cure, but the recent decade has seen many promising treatments which all depend upon diagnosing Alzheimer’s as early as possible. Typically, Alzheimer’s is diagnosed through cognitive testing.  Family members or health care professionals may realize that a person is experiencing forgetfulness, disorientation, or other symptoms. Unfortunately, by the time these symptoms are apparent and a diagnosis is made, the patient may have already experience [more...]

Neandertal DNA and Proteins

With the completion of the Neandertal genome by the team of Dr. Svante Paabo and a closer look at their proteins by Gregory Hannon’s team at CSHL, scientists reveal incredible similarities between Neandertals and humans. Neandertals, the extinct species of what are most likely our closest relatives, lived on earth at the same time as our human ancestors but died out about 30,000 years ago. With the sequence of their genome now complete, we can compare the DNA to humans and chimpanzees to learn more about what makes humans unique as a species. The discovery of fossils is an exciting link to [more...]
