DNA Spit Kits Off Walgreens' Shelves? Try Amazon.com

Genomics Law Report News and analysis from the intersection of genomics, personalized medicine and the law Earlier today I examined the FDA’s emerging regulatory “policy” with respect to direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests. The thrust of the FDA’s comments to date appear to focus on Pathway’s proposed partnership with Walgreens, specifically the fact that Pathway’s tests would be available in a “drugstore,” as the impetus for the FDA’s prompt and public regulatory response. I questioned whether the apparent distinction driving the FDA’s policy—focusing on the point [more...]

People who will be using the DNA final results in court and legal proceedings must get laboratory DNA screening instead of the home-test. Residence paternity assessments are ordinarily performed beyond legal requirements. They’re uncomplicated to obtain since convenience retailers and online shops are selling these kits. As soon as you send the outcomes to the laboratory to analyze, they are sure to keep the outcomes private. As a matter of [more...]

Mystery liverwort fungus, chapter 4 :Cornell Mushroom Blog

To be certain, we should repeat the DNA isolation and sequencing and see if we get the same answer. In these four posts, we have gone once around the loop: found a fungus, looked at it, tried to culture it, dived into the literature, sequenced some DNA and we have come up empty. We could either give up… or we could describe this fungus now as a new genus and species. But I am not satisfied. We will go around the loop again… and my Friday afternoon diversion is invading the rest of the week. Continued in Chapter 5 Afterword: The world of DNA sequencing might seem exotic, but I was [more...]

So if his DNA is safely tucked away in an untested rape kit, he can go on raping with impunity. Without the DNA in the rape kit, the woman has little to no chance of ever seeing her rapist brought to trial. The survivors of rape who have the courage to subject themselves to evidence gathering deserve to know that rape kits will not sit in a freezer. They need to know that law enforcement and all levels of government will catch up with the available forensic technology. Technology Review: A Genetic Christmas Story

Some people may have received an unusual gift this holiday season: an ancestry testing kit that uses a small swab of DNA to shed light on near and ancient family history. It sounds, at first, like a novelty item. But the kit may provide long-term assistance to scientists who are hoping to track the history of the human race. In one project, spearheaded by National Geographic Society and IBM, participants buy a kit for $99.95, scrape some skin cells from the inside of their cheek, and send the samples in for analysis. Once the DNA is processed, participants learn their haplogroup -- the [more...]

When a person reports a sexual assault, she - or he - will be asked to undergo a sexual assault evidence collection kit (a "rape kit") exam, a four- to six-hour process to collect DNA evidence from his or her body. Rape kit testing can identify an unknown assailant, confirm a suspect's contact with the victim, corroborate the victim's account of the assault, identify serial rapists by connecting crime scene evidence from separate incidents, and exonerate innocent suspects. Yet experts, including the Department of Justice and members of Congress, have estimated that hundreds of thousands of [more...]

Lesions to bases in DNA are caused by a combination of normal chemical activity within the cell and exposure to radiation and toxins coming from environmental sources including cigarette smoke, grilled foods, and industrial wastes. “Understanding protein-DNA interactions at the atomic level is important because it provides a clear starting point for designing drugs that enhance or disrupt these interactions in very specific ways,” says Brandt Eichman, associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University. “So it could lead to improved treatments for a variety of diseases, [more...]

The article is an excellent overview of the problem with over-the-counter DNA testing kits, which we actually looked at several months ago when the FDA made Walgreens pull gene testing kits off their shelves.  The reason they were pulled was because their accuracy can't be tested.  In fact, one analysis showed that using one DNA sample, three different tests for the [more...]

A person inherits half of autosomal DNA from the biological mother and the other half from the biological father. The Y chromosome markers are paternally related and passed from a father to his son.
