Soft drink additive damages DNA- report_6582

Research indicates that sodium benzoate, an ingredient in many soft drinks and sauces, has the ability to deactivate parts of DNA and eventually cause diseases such as Parkinson’s and cirrhosis of the liver. “My concern is for children who are drinking large amounts,” he said. Sodium benzoate is indicated in Australia as “Preservative (211)” on ingredients lists, and is included in Sunkist, Diet Coke, Sprite, Pepsi Max and many other drinks and condiments. The findings came from laboratory tests conducted with sodium benzoate on living yeast cells. Prof Piper was alarmed by the [more...]

Imagine Day Activity: Extract Your Own DNA! | iGEM of UBC

This is important because we are trying to gather a large amount of DNA in one place.  If they are negatively charged they will repel each other.  If the negative charge is matched by a positive charge (the Sodium ions) it will make it much easier for the DNA to gather together. Step 5: Fill the rest of the shot glass of alcohol -You must be VERY careful in this step to pour the alcohol on TOP of the spit and not let it mix.  You can do this by pouring it down the side of the glass very gently and slowly.  Note: you must have steady hands, so no drinking the alcohol beforehand. Predictors of global methylation levels in blood DNA of healthy ...

Background Estimates of global DNA methylation from repetitive DNA elements, such as Alu and LINE-1, have been increasingly used in epidemiological investigations because of their relative low-cost, high-throughput and quantitative results. Nevertheless, determinants of these methylation measures in healthy individuals are still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to examine whether age, gender, smoking habits, alcohol drinking and body mass index (BMI) are associated with Alu or LINE-1 methylation levels in blood leucocyte DNA of healthy individuals. Methods Individual data from five [more...]

Popular Mechanics Posts 2010 BREAKTHROUGH Awards — The Gadgeteer

While working at the National Institutes of Health in the early 1990s, Venter developed a way to rapidly discover genes by exploiting snippets of DNA called expressed sequence tags. In 1992, he founded The Institute for Genomic Research, and, three years later, he and a team decoded the first genome of a free-living organism. That led to Venter’s best-known breakthrough, mapping the human genome. Last May, he achieved a defining moment in the history of biology when he inserted digitally created DNA into a living bacterium, forming the first synthetic life. His ultimate goal is to design [more...]

Part of the reason for this is if one decides to take into account the plethora of species-specific DNA insertions and deletions ("indels") that are present along any segment compared between chimp and human, the percentage of identity drops. Another reason is that duplications, inversions, translocations, and transpositions at all scales uniquely characterize the two genome sequences -- these have to be untangled before aligning the sequences in order to measure their similarity. Also, the 99% identity figure is often derived from protein-coding regions that only comprise about 1.5% of the [more...]

Personalized medicine: Check your DNA at the door - SmartPlanet

College kids survive on a diet of beer and pizza, but personalized medicine might soon change that. This summer, UC - Berkeley wants 5,500 new students to participate in a DNA experiment: The students will be required to return a swab of their cheek cells, so they can find out if they have the genes to metabolize folate, lactose, and alcohol. Ideally, the students who lack the genes will modify their behavior accordingly. They would eat more green vegetables, avoid milk products (and prepare to explain to everyone and their mother why they now drink soy milk), and hold back on the drinking. [more...]

Certain changes in DNA can cause normal breast cells to become cancerous. DNA is the chemical in each of our cells that makes up our genes – the instructions for how our cells work. Some inherited DNA changes can increase the risk for developing cancer and are responsible for the cancers that run in some families. Certain risk factors are linked to the disease. A risk factor is anything that affects a person’s chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Some risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet are linked to things a person does. A GMO primer — What you should know about genetically modified ...

Ninety-five percent of the sugar-beet crop in the U.S. is genetically modified, but a recent federal ruling may have a huge impact on that. When it all began: The technologies that led to genetically modified foods were developed in the 1970s, with the advent of recombinant DNA technology. At the time, there were a lot of ethical debates and concerns about crossing the species barrier and transgenic technology. The focus then was on bacteria — mainly E. coli — and putting genes from different species into bacteria. Big Business: In the 1980s, Monsanto pushed to develop and use GM [more...]

Can DNA Tests Reveal Nationality? » Scienceline

The Borders Agency is primarily using two types of DNA tests: mitochondrial DNA tests, which examine the genetic information stored in a cellular structure called a mitochondrion, and what are called Y-line tests, which look at markers on the Y-chromosome passed from father to son. These tests have been widely used to examine people’s ancestral heritage. Since certain genetic variations are typical in certain areas, geneticists can use an individual’s DNA to estimate where their ancestors came from. But when this technique is used to look at someone’s nationality rather than the origin [more...]

Rapid and sensitive DNA detection methods have a wide range of uses from cancer and disease diagnosis to the detection of harmful bacteria in food and drink. Previous methods rely on optical methods and a time consuming pre-amplification of the sample, which while sensitive often take several weeks and require bulky apparatus. Electrochemical methods have been used to improve the speed and portability. Now, Elena Ferapontova, Kurt Gothelf and colleagues at Aarhus University have developed a lipase-based electrochemical technique that can detect as little as 20 attomoles (2 x 10-17 moles) of [more...]

Caffeine King: DNA Lemon Lime Energy Drink Review

DNA Lemon Lime comes in a mostly black can, with a yellow skull in a green star. Surprisingly, it has a lack of emphasis on the DNA strand behind the bare cranium. You'd expect with the name "DNA," that the can would have a scientific inspired theme, instead of the No Fear-type look used. Either way, the design is still simple without being empty, and is aggressive without overemphasizing it. A light, almost grainy lime begins the flavour, with its sweetness being more defiant and brazen than its sourness, resulting in it having a confection-like quality. Then there's a quiet birth of lemon [more...]
