Xiang-Jun's Corner: Further details of the DNA story revealed by ...
I read Watson's "The Double Helix" book a while ago, and overall I am quite familiar with the DNA story. Still, I found this account fascinating: it provides a "CAST LIST" in "The search for the structure of DNA" with photos (p521); and it succinctly summarizes the relationships among the key players. In science, no other story shows more dramatically the collaborative and competitive nature among scientists working on similar projects. Franklin’s X-ray diffraction photograph 51 of B-form DNA (see figure above, from Wikipedia), with its unambiguous evidence that DNA was helical, proved [more...]

New twists in double helix discovery story are uncovered ...
Cold Spring Harbor, NY -- The story of the double helix's discovery has a few new twists. A new primary source -- a never-before-read stack of letters to and from Francis Crick, and other historical materials dating from the years 1950-76 -- has been uncovered by two professors at the Watson School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). The letters both confirm and extend current knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the epoch-making discovery of DNA's elegant double-helical structure, for which Crick, James D. Watson (now CSHL's chancellor emeritus) and Maurice [more...]

Relations, difficult and dirty tricks between the discoverers of ...
Wilkins, who is – in the back of Franklin, by some accounts – showed Watson an image taken by his colleague, now immortalized as the picture 51, which clearly shows a double helix, an indication of the shape of DNA perceived by the young American. Alex Gann and Jan Witkowski, the two scientists who found the lost letters, say in Nature that Wilkins was a “torture”, torn between his desire to cooperate and his desire for a career and get results. Born deaf cats see better, an example of reorganization of brainPollution in Hungary: masks and goggles requiredAlzheimer's: a group of [more...]

\'Lost\' letters reveal twists in discovery of double helix
A twist of discoveryMany have argued that Franklin deserved Nobel recognition, because her experimental work revealed the double-helix structure that helped Crick and Watson build their DNA model. Even Watson suggested much later that Franklin and Wilkins should have shared a Nobel Prize in chemistry for their contributions. Franklin, who had all the photographic evidence of DNA’s double-helix structure in front of her, had dismissed the idea of a helix. That’s because she focused her attention on the clearer data from the A form of DNA, which looks less obviously like a helix than the B [more...]
