Shallow Cogitations: The "Born In the USA" DNA Sequence
An article that calls for the analysis of Barack Obama's DNA to settle once and for all the manufactured controversy over his American citizenship. A certificate that a child was born to Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Hussein Obama in Honolulu on 4 August 1961 might be true; but, assuming it’s true, it does not necessarily follow that Mr. Obama is that child. Whether he is or not requires genetic analysis. Now we have to list all of the possibilities, regardless of how outlandish they are. Assume that Hawai’i’s certification of live birth is true and official as far as it goes. If Mr. [more...]

DNA research article on Scotland's R1a1 Highland Clansmen DNA Genealogy and the search for Somerled By Andrew Mceachern and Anatole Klyosov Whilst there is much to do about Somerled being Norse and Professor Bryan Sykes "research" work, this is simply not true. Clan Donald carry an SNP, which is L176.1. SNP's are mutations that we get from our deep ancestors, they do not change their values. The Norse DNA that Sykes makes reference to DOES not carry this SNP, therefore Clan Donald did not get their ancestry from the Norse. Its this simple. For your reference I am also [more...]

A quick on-line search reveals many companies that offer “secret” or “discreet” DNA testing. The rapid proliferation of companies offering direct-to-consumer genetic testing at ever lower prices means that both the technology and motives exist for DNA theft. Yet in nearly every American jurisdiction, DNA theft is not a crime. Rather, the nonconsensual collection and analysis of another person’s DNA is virtually unconstrained by law. This article explains how DNA theft poses a serious threat to genetic privacy and why it merits consideration as a distinct criminal offense. You can [more...]

At the Library: DNA testing in genealogy « OGS Blog
Are you considering DNA testing as part of your family history research? DNA tesing has been a popular topic in genealogist circles over the last few years. In this month’s issue of Families, Paul Caverly has written an article about his own experiences using DNA testing in his genealogy research. The article can be found on page 6 of the August 2010 issue. Caverly’s article mentions some of the resources he used to learn more about DNA testing and genealogy. Some of the books and magazines he mentioned are part of the provincial library collection. DNA and Family History: how genetic [more...]

Who Owns Your DNA?
... that's the question posed by Consumer's Union (publishers of Consumer Reports)... which then goes on to discuss consumer gene tests and the problems with their results - barely mentioning that question of who owns our DNA. The article is an excellent overview of the problem with over-the-counter DNA testing kits, which we actually looked at several months ago when the FDA made Walgreens pull gene testing kits off their shelves. The reason they were pulled was because their accuracy can't be tested. In fact, one analysis showed that using one DNA sample, three different tests for the [more...]

In 1953, the molecular structure of DNA was discovered by Watson and Francis Crick. Since then, one of the most amazing discoveries in genetic research has been the multitudes of protein machines that repair DNA. Recently, a “fundamentally new” DNA repair mechanism was discovered by researchers at Vanderbilt University! Science Daily describes it this way, “Tucked within its double-helix structure, DNA contains the chemical blueprint that guides all the processes that take place within the cell and are essential for life. Therefore, repairing damage and maintaining the integrity of [more...]

The Structure of the DNA Molecule
Working with nucleotide models made of wire, Watson and Crick attempted to put together the puzzle of DNA structure in such a way that their model would account for the variety of facts that they knew described the molecule. Once satisfied with their model, they published their hypothesis, entitled “Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids: A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid” in the British journal Nature (April 25, 1953. volume 171:737-738.) Dr. Falk appears to be too hasty in his assumption that pseudogenes have "no function" and thereby show evidence for common ancestry. The bottom line is that the "junk" or "gibberish" DNA paradigm is being consistently overturned as time goes on, and we now know that the vast majority of our DNA has function. As one news article said when reporting on the results of the ENCODE project in 2007: The findings, from a project involving hundreds of scientists in 11 countries and detailed in 29 papers being published today, confirm growing suspicions that the stretches of 'junk DNA' flanking [more...]

This can be used to determine a dog's temperament before you even adopt it, which can be a great way to make sure the dog will get along with your children or your other pets. Rivalry Among DNA Sleuths Comes Alive in Letters - 3quarksdaily
The letters were written during a 26-year period when Crick informally guided the progress of molecular biologists around the world in establishing how DNA operates in living cells. An article on the letters was published Wednesday in the journal Nature, focusing on those related to the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure in 1953. “We are really between forces that may grind all of us to pieces,” the physicist Maurice Wilkins wrote after a disastrous attempt by Crick and his colleague James D. Watson to build a model of DNA based in part on data gathered by Rosalind Franklin. [more...]

The intactness of DNA is the keystone of genome-based clinical investigations, where rapid molecular detection of life-threatening bacteria is largely dependent on the isolation of high-quality DNA. Various protocols have been so far developed for genomic DNA isolation from bacteria, most of which have been claimed to be reproducible with relatively good yields of high-quality DNA. Nonetheless, they are not fully applicable to various types of bacteria, their processing cost is relatively high, and some toxic reagents are used. Our cells have nuclei, repositories that contain our DNA and the proteins that read them to produce an RNA copy of them. In earlier articles, I’ve mentioned in passing how the enormous length of DNA in our cells is fitted into a nucleus. Our DNA, all 2 metres of it, were you to stretch it out end-to-end — is fitted within a nucleus with a diameter of roughly 6-10 micrometres, about one-millionth of a metre. The trick is that a DNA molecule is very skinny — it’s only about 2 nanometers wide (2 [more...]
