Productive Nanosystems: The Movies

Productive Nanosystems: The Movies by Eric Drexler on 30 January 2009 In his comment on Molecular Machine Assembly: The Movie, Drew Whitehouse reminded me of a set of excellent animations of biological productive nanosystems, work done by Drew Berry. These videos are based on scientific data describing molecular structure and function, and from what I’ve seen, Drew Berry’s work is the best of its kind. Below are the most complete and directly accessible videos I’ve found. Productive nanosystems are nanoscale machines that make atomically precise products under programmable control, and [more...]

Free Online Guides: Invasive honeysuckle increase risk of tick ...

It has sensory organs on its front two legs, so it'll stand there and wave those legs around trying to detect your heat and your carbon dioxide signature. And when it gets closer, it kind of zig zags as it's approaching you, because it's homing in on your signal and when it gets really close, it grabs on."Sometimes I'll just stand there and watch the ticks do this," he says grinning. "It's pretty amusing."My record trap, the one that blew the rest out of the water, had 5,000 nymph lifestage lone-star ticks on it. We've done capture studies that suggest the nymphs don't travel much more than [more...]

The Crime Report » Archive » DNA Database For Dogs To Help ...

Scientists are hoping that a new DNA database for dogs will help track — and prosecute — people who breed dogs to fight, reports KQED radio. Advocates say there’s a risk that the DNA records could be used against the dogs, or against people who adopt them. The idea is to have a canine version of the FBI’s CODIS — a database of human DNA that is used to connect criminals to crime scenes. In this case, the DNA might help prove that breeders supplied dogs to a dogfighting ring. In a Missouri case, DNA samples from dogs proved that these weren’t just random pound dogs. They were [more...]

Scientists use DNA from otter scat to study growing population

Before extracting DNA from otter scat, transmitters were implanted in the abdomens of the animals and were tracked through the transmissions. Collars have never been used because otters are diving animals and their necks are too slender for them, Williams said. While some of the information gained from using transmitters are lost by extracting DNA, Williams said there are benefits as well. “It does increase the amount of information we can get on another level,” she said. Extracting DNA is less stressful on the otters, less expensive and less time consuming. “It identifies (otters) as [more...]

Breed-specific legislation is ineffective | Standard-Examiner ...

To begin with, the statement that 40 percent of dogs quarantined in Ogden from January to July were pit bulls is baseless, unless DNA testing was done. Since DNA testing became available to the public, it has been a revelation (even to lifelong animal care professionals) that many dogs assumed by appearance to be pit bulls or some type of bully breed were anything but. And it turns out that in the world of animal welfare, visual identification of breeds by shelter staff is notoriously inaccurate. Next, the claim that "... there is just too much evidence, official and anecdotal, that this [more...]

Where in the World is Zehra?: An Open Letter to Hebrew University

It has been brought to my attention that Professor Maya Kahanoff was recently let go from The Hebrew University on the grounds of her personal politics; it was made clear that her lifetime of knowledge on peace and understanding were no longer welcome at your university. As a student who was also made to feel unwelcome at The Hebrew University, I find this news incredibly painful, as Maya Kahanoff was a source of inspiration to everyone who met her; she personally touched me and completely transformed my educational experience at your institution. Please stop trying to convert me – it's getting very tiresome ...

Ideas such as the flat earth, the notion that the sun revolves around our planet or that we were created separately from animals are clearly unsupportable in the light of modern understanding. A quick bit of research around DNA and evolution blows the latter one right out of the water. Once again though, as a skeptic and an atheist all this means is that I do not believe in God – not that I wish any harm to those who do (however much they insult me with claims of arrogance or wickedness etc etc).  No reason to believe When I have no reason to believe and many reasons to disbelieve it would [more...]

Deer population in California declines steeply | ScrippsNews

The distinctive splayed antlers of black-tailed deer bucks have become an increasingly rare sight in California, particularly if you are accustomed to spotting the appendages through a riflescope. The California deer population has plummeted over the past two decades -- by 46 percent -- if the yearly count of bucks killed by hunters is a proper measure. A team of scientists led by the California Department of Fish and Game is fanning out across the rugged mountains of Mendocino, Glenn and Lake counties in an attempt to figure out just what is going on. "The deer population harvest has been [more...]

DNA test used to find out rescue dog's breeds |

DNA Testing for Dogs! What a brilliant idea. About 6 months ago I took in a lovely dog from Heathlands Animal Sanctuary in Royston. I wasn’t looking to have any more dogs as I was quite happy with my two King Charles Spaniels, but when I went onto the Heathlands website and saw the plight of some of these rescued dogs brought over from an awful existence in Ireland I had to have a look – and there she was! Do Not Overdo The Antibiotics

The quest for finding new antibiotics is still in place, sending lots of scientists out grubbing around in the dirt and performing highly technical DNA analyses on likely-looking bits of mud or mould. This is because bacteria have a tendency to develop a resistance to a certain antibiotic, which means that the doctor has to dish out a different antibiotic... but then the bacteria become resistant to that next antibiotic, and so forth. Are bacteria getting stronger and stronger via the process of antibiotic-stimulated natural selection? Is survival of the fittest working to breed new [more...]

Prescribed Reading On Prescriptive Information | Uncommon Descent

While initiatives such as the Origin Of Life Prize have encouraged researchers to find non-super-naturalistic processes that might explain the origins of prescriptive information, no offerings to-date have withstood the test of scientific scrutiny. Indeed all known cases of such information invariably point to the work of a mind. Johnson emphasizes the relevance of probability in his espousal of this inference- the simplest form of life was found to be 10exp80,000 times more likely of having a mindful than a non-mindful source. Johnson repeatedly stresses how the information content of DNA is [more...]
