Pig Sty Avenue: Apps, CAT and IRT
Say there's a commercial motive, in enabling students to pass a high stakes pen-and-paper test. One can of course provide classroom tuition for this, and no doubt would. But bearing in mind that most of this exam's candidates are teenagers, it would be useful in motivational terms to give them practice on an iPhone (or other) app. And it's in the design of the app where we get clever: make it a multiple choice with CAT, the students mail it into a program where it's scored with IRT. This would yield some very helpful data for that student, perhaps to be used back in the pen-and-paper [more...]

An Assessment Becomes a Learning Tool - Ning in Education
I watched a teacher very intentionally make sure that her classroom assessment - in this case the test she had given the previous day - was used as a LEARNING TOOL instead of simply a GRADING TOOL. Essentially Mrs. Shannon allowed her students to make corrections to their tests and earn partial credit as a result. This practice is fairly common. However, Mrs. Shannon added a few wrinkles to this common practice to ensure that students were doing more than just going through the motions of making corrections and instead were actually learning content not previously mastered. To give some [more...]

E-books fail the classroom test By Paul Taylor Published: September 5 2010 18:59 | Last updated: September 6 2010 10:19 Business school students give Kindle the cold shoulder Business schools pride themselves on being ahead of the curve when it comes to management theory and innovation. But their record is considerably less impressive when it comes to the implementation of cutting-edge technology such as e-book readers, Apple’s iPad and social networking, where students continue to outpace their tutors. So expectations were high a year ago when seven US colleges, including two business [more...]

Would More Time in the Classroom Help Our Education System ...
He claims that more days in the classroom equals greater learning retention – something that is sorely needed, especially in school districts with low test scores and high dropout rates, where students have less access to books and learning opportunities during the summer months. However, keeping facilities open more days of the year requires a financial investment that is only justifiable if it is time well spent. Critics claim that more time in the classroom will not do any good unless we concentrate on fixing what’s wrong with our educational system first. How should we fix our [more...]

Categories of Psychological Tests - Know the Test Concepts ...
IQ tests are measures of intelligence, while achievement tests are measures of the use and level of development of use of the ability. IQ/cognitive tests and achievement tests are common norm-referenced tests. In these types of tests, a series of tasks is presented to the person being evaluated, and the person's responses are graded according to carefully prescribed guidelines. After the test is completed, the results can be compiled and compared to the responses of a norm group, usually comprised of people at the same age or grade level as the person being evaluated. Autism and Gut Bacteria?
Here at the DNALC, we work with a lot of bacteria. One bacteria in particular is a harmless strain of E. coli called MM294. This strain, a strain unable to survive outside of its broth and agar domain, is used commonly in our classrooms. As students visit us each year, many have the opportunity to work with the bacteria. Whenever I tell my students that they will be working with E. coli, I tend to be on the receiving end of much criticism. E. coli gets a bad reputation and I understand that. My students immediately cringe and I know what goes through their minds. They think of the E. coli [more...]

How The Environment Plays A Role In Learning | World News Today
For instance, certain individuals may be brought up in the same culture, come from the same income bracket, they may like the same leisure activities and score the same results in an IQ test but one may still be more knowledgeable than the other. This is because every individual has their own uniqueness and they respond differently to different environments. (Wood, 1998) Some environments may enhance learning experiences in comparison to others. For instance, environments in which there are many knowledgeable people normally encourage others to want to learn more about them. Therefore, such [more...]

Several teachers have been fired as a result of the low scores, and others were reassigned, he said. Giving administrators the ability to fire teachers for poor performance is one of the central suggestions of “Waiting for ‘Superman.’ ” Over all, 38 percent of Promise Academy I’s students in third through sixth grade passed the 2010 English test under the state’s new guidelines, [more...]
