Student Perspectives: North Carolina to Take DNA from Arrestees

Law enforcement practitioners developed several novel techniques to take advantage of the opportunities provided by DNA profiling such as DNA Dragnets, Familial Searching, or Phenotype DNA profiling.  Arguably, these practices cause privacy concerns; however these practices have also helped police solve serious crimes. The courts agree that the taking of DNA from a person, by either a buccal swab or blood sample, constitutes a search, and must be reasonable to be authorized under the Fourth Amendment.  Furthermore, the Court determined in Skinner v. Railway Labor Executives’ [more...]

Police get new DNA powers - crime - national | Stuff.co.nz

Police fingerprinting suspects can now collect their DNA and match it against profiles from unsolved crimes, Justice Minister Simon Power has said. Until now police had to wait until someone was convicted or obtain an order from a High Court judge. The Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Act means they can take samples on arrest. From today they will be able to take DNA from anyone they intend to charge with an offence punishable by more than seven years' imprisonment. This will see an estimated 4000 more samples taken each year. From the middle of next year if the Government [more...]

Technology and Its Role In Criminal Justice | ScreamNews.com

A criminal is supposed to provide samples of his or her DNA in order to aid in comparing the DNA sample from the crime scene and that of the convict, because DNA profiling is usually reliable and accurate when the match is made then the convict is termed as guilty. The process of investigation: Collection of DNA samples from a crime scene is the first step in DNA step, this is followed by creating a DNA profile regarding this samples and the last step is the collection of samples from suspects for DNA profiling and comparing them with those from the crime scene. Advantages of DNA: It is [more...]

Electrostatic trap catches tiny particles - physicsworld.com

Since their invention about 40 years ago this technique has been used with great success in biophysics, helping researchers to unravel the complex elasticity and folding dynamics of DNA, for instance. But, because optical tweezers struggle to hold on to objects that are significantly smaller than the wavelength of light, they cease to work for objects that are smaller than 100 nm. Charge rather than size Now, a group at ETH Zurich has developed an alternative mechanism for trapping particles that does not suffer from the same limitation. The device works by suspending particles within an [more...]

Advantages of Nutrigenomics

DNA profiling and analysis, it can cost between $ 300 and $ 3,000. Accepted, scientists have to spend several years studying and research before people can fully enjoy what nutrigenomics can do with them. Among its benefits are long-term expansion of Hope, avoiding the disease or improvement, the unnecessary use of vitamins and supplements, and the pursuit of food intake without any effect on health. Since the public is made nutrigenomics industry in many developed a product specifically for certain individuals or groups of persons because of their genetic makeup. For example, based on the [more...]

Advantages Of DNA Paternity Test

DNA Paternity Test is trusted way of confirming a biological relationship of a supposed father to a child. In fact here are the two methods used to perform this type of test. 1. Court Admissible Test – Collection of samples is performed through a controlled chain-of-custody procedure  with a third party to act as a witness and verify the authenticity of the samples.  This is a cheat proof  system if a neutral and qualified third party witness is used. 2. At-Home DNA Paternity Test. DNA Testing kit is  usually sent at home and the person involved is responsible for collecting his own [more...]

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: GeneTree is Now Out of Beta

A new Y-DNA genetic test enables individuals to research paternal line connections of a male relative, and complements GeneTree’s existing maternal line mtDNA test. Y-DNA results show ancestry and connections to DNA cousins within the past few hundred years. The opportunity to find and connect with “lost” or unknown extended family members through the world’s most extensive correlated genetic genealogy database is a compelling GeneTree feature. “My 82-year-old mother was almost in tears when I told her we had found a branch of our family that we had lost touch with long ago,” said [more...]

Technology Review: A Portable DNA Detector

A new portable DNA analyzer performs real-time analysis of blood samples left at the scene of a crime. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, developed the device, which packs microfluidics, electronics, optics, and chemical detection technology into a single briefcase-sized unit. "While previous groups have developed lab-on-a-chip systems, none of them have succeeded in making a completely portable, robust system that can be used at a scene," says team leader Richard Mathies. On-site CSI: After a blood sample is collected from the scene of a crime, this briefcase-sized [more...]

Information About Aminocentesis | I am pregnant!

Except for the traditional conventional blood sample, there are lots of methods utilizing a variety of sampling now available in profiling DNA for paternity identification. A single of these advanced systems is known as amniocentesis. It truly is in addition referred to as amniotic fluid test or AFT. Originally, amniocentesis is a prenatal method to diagnose the chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections. The amniocentesis is performed inside the second trimester or throughout the 14th to 20th weeks of pregnancy. In this action, the OB-GYN uses ultrasound to guide a thin needle into the [more...]
